Potential Windows 7 upgrade questions

I was thinking of upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, and I had a few questions. I know 7 is in RC status, but should I do a clean install of 7 as my main OS or do a dual boot with Vista? Are there some people only using 7, or are they mostly dual booting? I probably wouldn't have a need to use Vista though once Windows 7 is installed.

I had a similar quandry. If you dual boot you caan see if you like 7 (i love it) before you have to pay for it. Clean installs are allways best in fact I do one every 3-4 months just to keep things in warp drive. As soon as 7 beta came out I convert all 5 boxes from vista to win 7. Its that good. I have been able to run it on machines that choke on vista, run it from a flash drive in case of emergency. If you are the adventurous type go start to win 7 do not pass go or collect $200. Im in a much better mood since win 7 than i was with vista.

I tried 7 out on a VM and compared to Vista, I didn't really notice a difference in performance. Probably because my hardware fairly new (November 2008). However, after hearing performance gains in some of the programs that I use (MS Flight Sim 10), it might be a good idea.

I've got an external hard drive that I can back my stuff up to before I install everything.

I think it all depends what your essential usage of the OS is going to be, what your needs are, and what you feel that you should be using.

I am a mac and a pc guy, I gotta have my gaming which I do on the P.C. desktop I built, and I do my business, programming, image rendering, video editing on the mac os x.

I am using the Windows 7 64 bit RC on my desktop for my primary OS as of now, I just reformatted today and installed , after using the 7000 32 bit build for some time.

I experienced almost no issues through the time I utilized 7000 build as my main os for P.C. gaming, web browsing, movie viewing , etc.

Just assess what your needs are with what the OS can give you, then attempt deciding what will work best for you.

I had for some time duel booted vista and mac os x on my macbook pro with no problems, as to Windows 7 RC duel booting I have not attempted yet on any of my computers, so hats off to anyone with recent experience with 7 and duel booting on mac or any box, and whatever information you can disclose to our OP here.

Had a question about upcoming builds of 7. How do you guys manage when a new build comes out and you have to re-format? Do you reformat after every new build that comes out? Or wait until a build with some big changes comes out then do a re-format? There might be quite a few more builds before the final release version, I'm not sure though.

There are some, like me, that do upgrades with every leak/release and things go along fine. Many others here would tell you the only way is to clean install.

I say go for the upgrade. If there are any things you don't like about how it went, then do a clean install in its place.

I myself have done a "Upgrade" on every new version since "7000" which was my original Clean install.
7000 - 7022- 7044 - 7068 -7077 - 7106 - 7127 - 7137. As you can also see I bypassed 7100-RC. since I was running 7106 when it came out.

I switched to the 7000 (32) bit build a few months back when it first came out, I had been using Vista previously on my gaming desktop.

Since then, just yesterday I downloaded the new RC (64) bit 7100 Build, and deleted my partition on HD, formatted, installed fresh version.

I don't like to get too obsessive with updating every time they give a new build, if its getting me what I need it to, I really have no reason to upgrade immediately.

I would say back up your data of course, and go for it, see if you like it, which I think you will, 7 has a lot of new great features , and things they tweaked to improve from previous windows operating systems.

I have build 7137 installed currently and some of my programs such as FSX have noticed a 10-15 FPS increase. This is very good news. Things seem to be running faster in other areas but that's probably because I just recently installed everything.
