I had a problem recently, my PSU stopped working slowly. so i bought
this PSU 'http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/powersupplies/fd-newtonr2-psus'

my question:- is there a way to find out if my PSU is overtaxed
(without external devices)?

this info is taken from the bios on system startup/idle, will it help?

it says 584W recommended but my last psu was 750 (3 years old) and it failed. I have upgraded to 1000W. the web-site says amps are just as important as watts. can somebody explain that to me?

Your power supply usually has a number of 12V rails and the amperage is split up between them. Some power supplies have a single 12V rail that has high amperage. A rail is like a circuit. Power cables from your power supply come off specific rails.

The amps from a rail must be enough to handle the load you put on that rail For instance, you wouldn't want to run your graphics card and CPU/MB off the same rail - you need to balance the load across the rails. The amperage from a rail needs to be enough, say, to power your CPU and whatever else you run on that rail. For instance, my CPU, which will draw up to 185 watts, will need 185/12=15A and my graphics card can use up to 219W = 18A. The sum of the equipment you are powering off a rail mustn't exceed the maximum power available for that rail, which is 12V x the maximum current available for the rail. The power supply I have has two 22A and two 25A 12V rails ( which can supply 264W and 300W respectively) so I try and keep the MB/processor and Graphics card separate on the higher amperage rails and the disk drives on the lower amperage rails. Your PS manual should have the layout of what cables come from what rail and the current that each rail can handle like the snip below from my TP new 650W power supply

It may have been that you hadn't properly distributed the power on your 750W power supply.

so, my psu has a single 12v rail with a max 75amp.

- Is that good?
- Will it run a high-end gamers pc?

Why buy some random PSU from a new to the market case manufacturer?. You should have gone for something from Enermax.

Probably because he forgot to consult you? The better question: why rain on his parade?

Because its a random brand that has little backing or support. Why trust your PSU to this sort of brand instead of a reputable solid brand who has been building PSU's for decades??

I agree with you 100%. Nothing you've said is incorrect in any way shape or form... it's just that it's too late to do anything about it. He already owns it, so why bother criticizing it? The only thing accomplished is making some guy feel bad about his hardware.

thanks everybody for you input.

- hardware, it was a mistake to buy unknown but i liked the reviews and comments ive read around the web and thought it'd be the next step from what i had.

i have one last question.

what does this mean?

CPU 1.323v
CPU/NB 1.158v
cpu/vdda 2.527v
dram 1.574v
HT 1.217v
NB 1.118v
SB 1.111v
3.3V 3.312v
5V 5.059v
12V 12.158v

is 12v the limit and 12.158 means im exceeding the limit resulting in the psu degrading sooner rather than later?

- hardware, it was a mistake to buy unknown but i liked the reviews and comments ive read around the web and thought it'd be the next step from what i had.

i have one last question.

what does this mean?

CPU 1.323v
CPU/NB 1.158v
cpu/vdda 2.527v
dram 1.574v
HT 1.217v
NB 1.118v
SB 1.111v
3.3V 3.312v
5V 5.059v
12V 12.158v

is 12v the limit and 12.158 means im exceeding the limit resulting in the psu degrading sooner rather than later?

No, the ATX spec has a range of acceptable voltage for the 12V and it is between 11.4 and 12.6V. Plus, what is measuring the 12V may have some variation as well. You are fine.
