OK...this is driving me insane.

I have my Windows 7 Ultimate PC here and I can connect to my worksite via the built-in VPN software in windows 7 no problem whatsoever.

I've just built a second PC and installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it, it is sitting here right next to me on my same network and it refuses to connect via VPN.

Username and Password is OK, I've perfectly mirrored the VPN configuration between the two machines and one connects and the other won't.

I've tried turning off all of the windows firewalls on the problematic system with no success.

Everytime it get's to verifying username and password and then it stalls there and eventually comes back with a 619 error. I've checked the logging, but I can't see anything useful there (but maybe i don't know what to look for?).

Can anyone help?

Windows 7 home can not connect to a domain network to authenticate, whereas ultimate and professional can. Does your worksite use a domain?

Is IPv6 enabled on either of the machines? Are you using the windows built-in client or another client (ie. cisco)? What antivirus apps are you using on the two machines? double-check that the antivirus scan settings are the same.

Is the W7 Ultimate PC already connected to the VPN when you try the Home Premium machine?

Try connecting *only* the Home Premium. It could be a problem with the remote server and you router's NAT setup. PPTP is finicky about multiple connections through NAT.

Anything else to try?

I have this exact same problem and have tried everything listed here, with no luck.

It's funny this topic has just popped up as I've just had a 619 error while setting up my VPN's.

I fixed it by typing the password, when ever I copy and pasted it into the password box then authenication failed.

Howdy folks.

I'm having this exact problem; it's sending me round the bend!
I've had a really good look around on this site and on Google.

The most annoying thing is I've used the VPN before; from this same network and laptop (when it was running Ubuntu).

  • I've turned off IPv6.
  • My VPN host doesn't use a domain.
  • I'm not running any firewall software and the Microsoft built-in Security Centre is off.
  • I've run Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware software to make sure everythings clean.
  • I've tried putting my laptop in my routers DMZ to rule NAT out of the equation.
  • I've gone through every running process and killed anything that it looks like it might use/mess with my networking settings.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit.

I really hope someone out there can help me.

Hmm, I have resolved this problem, but I cannot remember the details now.

I think it might have been my IP address. I use a similar configuration on my home network, as we do on our company network, so I changed my home network to use numbers over 50 (and all the work ones were under 50).

With windows 7, I also find I get errors connecting the first time sometimes, but trying a second time goes through.

I did also have hassles with Shrew Soft VPN, but I can't remember if it was XP, or Win 7 that finally managed to connect.
