if you want to have a little fun with a friend set there taskbar to autohide.
once hidden take a screen shot with the print screen key.
now set the desktop to hide all icons, and change their background to the screen shot you just took.

In college this morning, one of my friends decided it would be a good idea to try and install IE8 to his memory stick (he's thick and easily distracted). At the end of the lesson I realised the installer had finished whilst he was staring blankly at it.
I directed him to the task manager, then the processes tab, and told him that the one named 'explorer.exe' was the name installers process. (You can see where this is going)
He didn't listen at first, and went back to the application tab and tried to end it that way, but it didn't work. Unpertubed, he went back to the processes tab and killed the explorer process.
We all laughed, doubly so because you would expect that someone on a computer programming course would have a basic knowledge of processes.

That's a good one. I played that once on my sister. You also need uncheck the show icons box (I did this in XP).

Many years ago a friend and I were camping and scouting some land.
He thought it would be funny to replace the water in my canteen with pickle juice.
Ok so I'm 500 yards out and decide to take a drink - hahaha jokes on me.
Well, I got him back.
I took a can of sardines in hot sauce and dumped the contents into a wrapped up paper towel, placed this mess under his drivers seat capet flap.
About a week goes by and now his van smells like dead fish.

Ok so that doesn't have anything to do with computers but he had to drive with his 'windows' down.

The original trick with the screenshot of the desktop is to take a screenshot with all icons present and set this as background.

At this point you remove some of the actual icons so that the inactive ones show through.

A variation is to have the taskbar present when you take the screenshot and then hide this when the screen is set as the wallpaper....

At college there a few tricks that get played on people including hiding things (pen drive) a fun one was a batch file that opened photoshop notepad and looped (he was idiot to open it)as no one likes the person. I have had a few played on me like hiding my mouse behind the pc (wireless mouse) using a laptop at college I can atleast lock my screen

I remotely controlled my parent's computer once. It was right after the watched I-robot. The thought the "ghost" was in their machine.

In past versions of windows it could be added to the startup list. I'm sure there's way to do it by editing the registry too, but one way that would work in xp, vista or 7 is to create a login script that runs the following command prompt: c:/windows/system32/shutdown.exe /r ...
as soon as the user signs in they get a window that pops up saying "you will be logged off in less than a minute"

In the early 80's, there was a girl working in the geology department at the gold mine i was at.

She was a fair B... Well, not a nice person.

When she was away from her comp, one of the mining engineers changed her dos prompt from C:\> to C:\Now formatting harddrive> (i think that how it looked using "new prompt" command).

She came back in a hurry to print of a doc for her boss, seen the change, tried to print, but would not work.
Turned out it had a loose connection to the printer at the same time. All hell broke loose, but all those in the know, couldn't speak. They were all doubled over laughing.

After that joke, she became an even BIGGER B... You know, NOT nice person, lol.

Ya'll aint right. As if their isn't enough most people can mess up on their own, I know first thing I do is get this panic attack, then have to tell myself slow down it'll be alright. You guys would kill me with that stuff.

One of the best Practical jokes of the good old days used to rely on the fact that people who know what they're doing tend to miss the obvious.

The trick was simple - swap the mouse and keyboard plugs around :devil: - the thing is people would check the plugs but only to see that they were fully inserted, not where they were inserted.

USB cured that one of course

One of the more juvenile pranks is to replace all of the windows sounds with belches, farts and the sound of a toilet flushing when you shut it down
