Prevent IE 11 from being called by programs

I will not use internet explorer because, in my opinion, it's buggy, non-standards complaints, easily hacked, and just plain ugly. On my desktop computer, if I click on a link within a program for its help or support site, Firefox, my default browser, opens the page. On my laptop, which has the same set up, internet explorer opens. If I disable internet explorer the link goes dead. Is there a way to have on Firefox (or Opera, or Chrome) open these pages?

Make sure you don't have Bingware installed from Windows Update. Hide it if offered.

It should also ask you when you install it.

Internet Explorer can even be turned off in Control Panel>Programs and Features>Turn on or off Features.

Prevent programs from using IE

I made the changes in Set Default Programs. Now Outlook is giving me an "Access Denied" error. I thought Microsoft signed a consent decree precluding their programs from being defaults, or some thing like that.

Internet Explorer - block permanently

I'll just mention that it's possible to block IE (or any other process) permanently using registry settings.

Software needed to configure registry:

http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/341165-how-block-applications-toolbar-installers.html

Softpedia download link provides the software without needing to register.

IE is one of the default programs that you can block. If you ever need to run it you'd need to right click your IE shortcut and choose "Run as administrator" to get around the block.

Note: See the advice given in the following posts. Blocking IE will mean that you need to use a different email client as it seems very likely that Outlook will not work with IE blocked.

I just opened Office 2007 Outlook on my desktop and selected a link from within a message. It went straight to Firefox. I'll have to get back to ou on the screen shots. I'm using my desktop with ignores IE.
