No, if the printer is attached to the desktop, the desktop has to be on.

install the printer software on the laptop.,have the printer switched on and see if it is recognised when you set up the wifi connection from laptop to printer.
both my desktop and laptop connect to the printer but i dont have a wired connection .
so zepher may be correct but its worth trying to connect . and it may be a case of unplugging the printer to the desktop temporaily but i would have thouht they would both connect,
i guess it also depends on the printer model and its age.

What is the name and model of your printer? Is it a network attached device with it's own IP address?

To give you a solution, you have to provide the following:
Router and printer make and model.

Some wireless printers (maybe all of them) can create an ad-hoc network and print directly from a wireless device.
If your printer is wireless, you can configure it to your network and print to it from your laptop and desktop.
If its not wireless and your router has a printer server, you can attach it there and print from any computer on your network.

There are a few options but we need to know what you have.

That Printer Model does not support any form of direct network connectivity to the router; you'll either have to directly connect the printer on to your Laptop via USB and install the correct drivers on your Laptop or do what you did earlier on with the Desktop + Printer combination on your network.

even i buy a usb to ethernet adapter this will not work..?

No it will not, the printer's firmware will not recognise the protocols of that adapter (unlike your PC) and will fail to work.

There is no way around that physical limitation.

Agree with solarmystic. You have to overcome that limitation with a more expensive device that handles that translation, simple adapters won't cut it. You would have to purchase a more expensive USB/ethernet print server:

Newegg.com - Print Servers, Network Print Server, Wireless Print Server

Print Servers, Ethernet Print Server, USB 2.0 Print Servers, Internet Print Server at TigerDirect.com

Cheapest one I found (but don't know how well it works):

http://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Server...=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B000FW60FW

You'll have to do some research to ensure compatability. And I think you'll still need the printer driver installed on the laptop. But you won't have to have your desktop powered to print (long as you're willing to part with some cash)!

It should, as that's what they're designed to do. But make sure you read a bunch of reviews to see how well they do the job before settling on one.
