Printer (HP Deskjet 500C) - New Build

Love this old printer (supports both parallel and serial)

Put a USB to Parallel Port Connector
Used Windows Update to download Win7 driver for this printer.
Showed "i" on Printer
Customized and changed Port to USB001 Virtual Printer Port
Changed to Check.
Still Won't Print.

Questions:
1) I assume that since it says a virtual port it is running through the common
USB controller and hence the USB plug can be in any USB (e.g. USB 2 or 3)?

2) Where do I go from here?

The problem is the number of control signals, or lack of, that are available on the USB/Serial Converter. I've never seen one of these work, or a post with someone getting one to work with an HP.

Time for a new Printer.

As I said, love this old printer.
I do agree there is something going on with the signals on these new motherboards.

My old original IBM Keyboard would not work off the PS2 port (a new PS2 keyword will), but if I convert the keyboard input to USB (old plug > PS2 >USB) works fine.

Have a COM port if all else fails (always ran parallel before)

As firebird says mate maybe time for anew one but there are adaptors for the USB to COM ports if you Google it will probably come up with suppliers - as there is out here.

Well maybe I have it wrong but just my two cents worth and I have attached a pic of one from my supplier so you can see if it is the thing you want.

The user has an adapter but it doesn't work. ALL of them that I've either tried myself, or users tried when I was on the Dell forum did not work with a HP printer or scanner. The problem appears to be the number of control signals that the USB/Serial port has, compared to a "real" serial port. The HP needs more than what the USB/Serial devices have. I recall one user with a different brand printer getting it to work, but never an HP.

Cripes that is cheap mate I thought I was getting a bargain for $189 for the HP Officejet Pro 8600 that I replaced the inkaholic Canon with and it is a beauty.

Cheap printers are just that. Actually a loss leader I think, with only about 50 pages of ink on board and will soon require new ink cartridges for just ... $23.95! Perhaps why HP is spinning off the hardware division - all the money is in the ink.

Well a bit OT but I agree Roger that is why I bought the HP I did because the Canons I used to like were very thirsty and terribly noisy. My aftermarket inks for the HP Officejet I get for $12 a pop whereas the Canons wwere $25!! and lasted no time at all.

Yep I know mate but I have found the cost of the machine v the inks is very nearly all expensive machine low cost inks and vice versa but I do agree even so that the inks are well over priced for what they actually are and the chip feature is a real sly move and I would reckon it costs more than the ink and container combined.
I used to refill until that happened and the inks were extremely cheap and the amount one got was enough for usually around two and a half fills of the original cartridge.
