Solved problem converting fat32 to ntfs on xp drive

Yeah, i know xp is ancient and this is a win7 forum, but i'm on my phone and kind of desperate for help, so feel free to cyberkick me in the sack.

Anyway, i defragged this old xp drive with 9g free and tried to convert from fat32 to ntfs using the win convert utility.
When it had finished, with no obvious problems, the comp rebooted and flashed this long unreadable bluescreen error while booting win, then went into a reboot loop.

Any common problems you guys might know of?
I'm kind of afraid i might have to reformat.

Thx a ton for any help or advice.

IM currently repairing or reinstalling xp from cd but i'm pretty sure it's hanging

Hi and welcome to SevenForums.

Try using the command line as administrator. Here is an example of the command you will need to do:

 [B]convert[/B] drive_letter: [B]/fs:ntfs[/B]

I would also run a chkdsk on that drive to make sure there is no error's that could be stopping it. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

Think i ran chkdsk already, but now iVe got a lead.

When i used that convert command i had read that it would prompt you for volume name and 2 Y answers to questions.
It prompted me for vol name, then saod it couldn't convert a mounted disk, or something, and asked if i'd like to force a dismount, or whatevet

It said it would convert on reboot and looked like it did with np, until iy rebooted again.
So, i just ran norton partitipn magic and it says my ntfs partotion is imprperly dismounted.
So i gotta google wtf that means

Ok, that didn't mean much.
Now i'm trying to figure out chkdsk.
C: is now some kind of 4m ms-ramdrive, so i'll see if i can somehow dos into my actual drive from winxp cd

I went into win recovery and it put me at a c:\windows dos prompt so i'm doing a chkdsk /r because it said /f wasn't valid.
This looks like a surface scan so i'll crack a snickers

OH YEEEEAAHHHH!!! #kool-aid

Apparently, my earlier chkdsk wasn't the actual drive, so i took your suggestion and chkdsked the drive which found and repaired one error.
I had also started a win reinstall, so o had to finish that, but now i'm good as new AND ntfs.
