Thanks for everyone's help in advance.

I'm running Windows 7 on a netbook and have Office Ultimate 2007. The problem is whenever I download an Office document from an email or a site (usually a Word doc), for some reason I can not just open the document. I have to save the file first as it appears as an "Unknown file type" even though the download window displays the file as a ".doc" file.

Does anyone know how to open Word documents without having to save the file (some files I don't need so I just want to open without saving). This is the first time I've encountered this problem and I don't have this problem on my Windows XP machine.

Hello, Welcome to SF,

Follow this Tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9154-default-programs-associate-file-type-protocol.html make sure Microsoft Word is associated with DOC or DOCX file extension.

Hope this helps,
Captain

Thanks for the tips.

Captain, I appreciate the welcome and your tip. I checked the default programs-associated files list on my machine and every DOC extension (xml, x, html, etc) was properly associated with Word. For some reason I closed out of the control panel and now I'm able to download the file i needed without saving it.

Again, thanks for the help!
