Hi all.

For the past couple of months i've had the same four updates cropping up in windows update and they never seem to install.

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430)
Security Update for Windows 7 (KB2393802)
Security Update for Windows 7 (KB977165)
Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688)

These are the only four updates ive had coming up for a few months now (at least it seems its been that long), if they do try to install it just takes forever and sometimes i go to shutdown and it says its finishing off the update process but sometimes that also takes a veeery long time. Either way when i start up my computer its not long before it notifies me to install these updates again.

Many thanks to anyone who could shed some light on this problem.

I have the same problem for Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688). Tried to install it manually, but the file is not located in the System 32 as indicated. It's located in another Windows location. The manual download will install, but the update still shows "failed."

Frankly, I spent a day trying to find a solution; and now I just don't care anymore. Apparently you and I are not the only ones and I am assuming someday, someone will figure it out.

Try a manual install of the update. Sometimes this will work when Win Update doesn't.
Easy to try and a good first step.
As Ambimom noted it doesn't always work.

Do one at a time.

Hello. I just recieved the update today for the XML and have had a miserable time; but I did figuri it out I hope. After I installed it (6 times uninstalling and installing) I turned my AV and Firewall off. I went into delete programs. From there I clicked on the KB973688 (the primary download). Instead of uninstalling, there is the change button. I clicked on the change button then modify. You should see the two listed there (there is a sm? or something like that on there that isn't working, over patched I guess). Click the down arrow buttons and run both of them as on entire hard drive (they should be noted as administrator when you do that). It ran me through some steps and I clicked finished when it was done? I guess that would mean that the updated installed? Wouldn't that be basic computer science when a program installs and you click finish its done and complete? I don't know. Anyway my machine is working just fine and both programs are listed as installed when I rebooted. Hope this helps. My system is listed above.
