Problem installing GPU

John, That first "Vista" type screen looks like starting Windows repair. Did you take out the w7 disk or USB stick?

Hum Gary I haven't had the CD in since I installed the 7 so why that Vista like startup is happening is a mystery.

The Device Manager I found and it has the GPU listed with the yellow triangle I tried that driver option and it tells me that the correct driver is installed.

Do you think I might have a lemon GPU??

To answer Steve's query the on board graphics are perfect it just seems to be this card is stuck in a set mode of some sort and cannot be changed.

On the Sandy Bridge I have an ATi Radeon HD 5450 passive unit that has never been a problem so I am wondering if it is worth trying that in the new machine and see if it works in it?

hmm, can you try testing on a different PC?

Another issues that maybe the cause could include IRQ conflicts, but any motherboard just about has an automaticly assigned IRQ values, with IRQ conflicts being rare.

Steve had mentioned you try another GPU in the BBB if you have one. You can try the new GPU in the SB too.

Try the new one in your main rig. The downside will be it will install the nVIDIA drivers.

Bingo!! I just put in an old Asus AX850 I dug out of an old gamer and it worked straight away - didn't need drivers nothing - res is now at 1900x1080 and it is quiet!.

I have refurbished this unit some time ago as in cleaning , re lubing the fan bearings, re thermal etc. Most of the other "spare" GPU's are those old types that don't fit that form of slot - I think they were called AGP or something.

The colours are brilliant and so clear the text is as sharp as and I guess I must have beeen real lucky that this was the only card I had that would fit eh?

Just cannot believe it worked like magic so the GTX I guess must be faulty?

Yes Gary I think it is because I had to change the resolution with it, it shows up in Device Manager with no yellow triangle - tells me the driver is up to date, and the monitor is plugged in to it.

So could it be running the board through this GPU though and if so how could I check that? Mind you I think the display is a better quality than when I was running the monitor off the board.

Look I just tried something and I know I shouldn't have but I swapped the lead t the board and no screen put it back into the GPU and screen perfect.

Ok Steve I eventually found it I was looking in the wrong spot it was something to do system configuration I think. Anyway it had the options of auto PCIE or PCI etc

Well whatever there is no change in the machine still working fine.

I have just had a request too from the dealers to try the new cards in another machine as they think maybe the cards are dead. That would have to be real bad luck having two items down at the same it eh? But by the same token it would explain the grief that it has been giving me / us.

John, that's SOP. Just be sure to remove all the drivers from the machine you put it in. You can reinstall them later. It is rather a PITA, but really the only way to know for sure. I believe you have an AMD card in the SB machine. If that's so, be sure to remove all the drivers with driver sweeper in safe mode. AMD and Nvidia drivers do not get along at all. But in reality, if you get rid of the AMD drivers first, Windows will install a generic graphics driver and you will see a big difference than the experience in the new build without installing Nvidia drivers if the card is OK.

Hum good job you caught me right now Steve because I have been held up looking for my spare Corsair power leads for the 650 and had I not it would have been in there and fired up by now. Gary has probably told you I am a bit of a have it done yesterday / gung ho sort. Have already tried the sound card and it works ok

So I don't know what the go is thee but back to the GPU ok I'll do the drivers in safe mode - although it was pig of a thing to fix when I first got it with all that flipping Catalyst stuff,
But anyhow to look for those leads
(haven't seen the lying around have you LOL!!)

Sorry for late reply Steve had to duck out for a while and have been trying since I got back to find those PCI leads for my HX 650 - everything but.

So I think I will have to go into town tomorrow and pick up something even a Molex to PCI adaptor, as I ca see no alternative - the minute I get them home I'll put my hands on those leads I just know I will.

But I can go ahead and uninstall those drivers at least

In a nutshell Gary no and no. The modular leads for the 1050 will not fir the 650. So I am going to have to find a Molex to PCI lead to hook up the power.

I'm confused. The HX 650 is supposed to come with two PCI-E power connectors. The specs at www.corsair.com could be clearer, but I think that they are both 6+2 pin connectors. That should cover all high-end cards currently on the market. You shouldn't need any Molex-to-PCI-E adapters.

Or is the HX650 as sold in the Southern hemisphere somehow different?

Thanks fellas I rigged up a Molex to the PCI with an adaptor I bought this morning.

However same result chaotic screen and I did remove the ATi stuff first and then installed the Nvidia drivers so looks like a dodgy GPU.

I did try the one that is working in the Ivy Bridge and try it in the Sandy but got nothing at all. I thought perhaps it might be the cable as the cable on the Ivy Bridge had the full set of pins whereas the Sandy monitor cable had the sort where the pins are divided up into little blocks - 3x3 but I then tried the same sort of cable in the Ivy and it works so don't know what went wrong there.

Anyway look thanks for all the help I shall return the faulty card asap.

Oh and Bob mate you haven't sen my room/s of gear - just can't find where I put those cables
