Solved Problem installing KB2536276

I get error 800B0100 when trying to install KB2536276.
I downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness Tool, but it did no good - installation of KB2536276 still fails.

Anybody else run into this?
Anybody know how to get around the problem?

Try downloading KB 2536276 manually to your desktop > then install it.

Is that wise considering that I followed the procedure mentioned in that second link (running the System Update Readiness Tool and retry the install) and it didn't help. If I have a hosed over registry and the tool to fix related registry problems didn't fix it, I'm hesitant to go forward manually.

Uh, no. I stopped reading at the "Method for Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003" line; I assumed everything from there on was for older systems.

I guess I'd better give it a try.

Update: I downloaded and tried running the fix under "Fix it for me". It said it didn't apply to my operating system. do you know that it's supposed to work for Win7 x64?

"Fix it" works for some problems....not all.

*Have you a System Restore spot created BEFORE the problem commenced?

*If not it looks like the next step is to contact Microsoft Technical Support directly.

This fix was one of several I tried putting on using System Update. I'm pretty sure a system restore point is created by the Update process so I'm sure I've got the restore point. I guess a system restore is the next step.

Remember to go to the restore point PRIOR to the update problem.

System restore failed. I tried 2 different ones but no luck with either one. The error message suggested I turn off anti-virus security programs so I turned off mine - ZoneAlarm Security Suite - but that had no effect. I have no idea what state I'm in now (other than the state of confusion).

Gees. That's a bit brutal. Before I do that let me make sure I know what to expect. I'm trying to go back to a restore point about 5 days before I ran into the problem. I ran into the problem when I tried installing a bunch (12) fixes, but I have no idea when the problem actually occurred or what caused it (but I suspect the hangup that happened when I was first downloading the fixes).

If the restore is successful should I try installing just KB2536276 rather than all the fixes? And if the install fails should I try an even earlier restore point?

FYI - Zone Alarm is often implicated in BSOD problems.

*IF you decide to try Sys Restore again clean out App data / local / temp.
Start - Run - type in %temp% - ok - organize - select all - organize - delete { note you may be asked to skip some - that is ok}

{*Let us know how you go please with Sys Restore. If / when this is done , & successful, you can think about the method of updating... again.}

If it were me I would be seeking Microsoft's Tech help as I suggested earlier.{ post 6}

*Re your update settings -
I suggest you change them to notify you but let you choose when to download them.
May be good practise to do a few at a time only rather than "oodles" at once.

*In the future I suggest that you always make sure you have a current system restore point prior to downloading anything.

A reminder -
Sometimes in order to get updates to install properly, you may need to do them manually.

Visit Microsoft's Download Center:
Microsoft Download Center: Search Results
Search for each update code. {starts with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers.}
Click the link for the download.
Click Download and Run.
You'll need to accept the agreement and then click Continue.
Repeat this process for each download that Windows Updates was unable to install.
Run Microsoft update again, click Check for updates. Hopefully it will show that you are completely patched.

I manually installed the fix and it went on fine, and this didn't seem to upset Windows Update; it works. That means I no longer have a need for a System Restore, but I may try it again soon just to get familiar with it.

Regarding the restore points, I usually (well, sometimes) remember to create one before installing products, etc. Windows Update creates one before installing (or maybe it's before installing) fixes. I don't need to do one manually do I?

Regarding automatically checking for updates, I really don't like anything deciding on its own when to use the network connection. I know I don't have any choice for a lot of products (like Adobe products) but I still want to control all I can.

Whew! I already have NetBios over TCP disabled.

I have searched for ZoneAlarm and BSOD but could never find anything specific to my version of ZA and Windows, and never could tell what other hits might apply.
