I'm using IE8, 32-bit, on Windows 7. I also have the default Windows Media Player. It did not ask for a plug-in, however I did notice that that if I view "Manage Add-ons" under IE's "Tools", Windows Media Player is listed as an add-on. Media Player itself has a Tools/Options/Network section with various protocols and "multicast streams" checked by default.

Just to make sure it's missing, set the add-on's drop down list to "all add-ons" and highlight "Tool Bars and Extensions". If it's still missing I'd check Media Player's Network Protocols and make sure they are checked. Set Media Player as the default player in Default Programs. Reset IE: Tools/Internet Options/ Advanced/Reset. Reboot. If your lucky, it will appear as an add-on. I can't say how to specifically "put it into the add-ons list" since I never had to put it there.
