did you mean opening a file? a folder doesn't need a specific program to open, a file is the one that needs different programs to open. if it is a file, then you need to find the correct program that will open that type of file. you know this by checking the extension of the file, something after the .???, eg. .mp4 for video file, .txt for text file. after noting the extension, you can search the web for the associated program to open it and make the program the default one used to open that file. then windows will know what program to be used directly without asking again.

Hello souvikmajumder

Download and merge the default "folder" associations from here- http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html and reboot see if the fixes it

Danny
Just what a wanna advise him. But have all users on this system same problem?

It makes no difference its only the associations windows uses to open folders that seems to have been corrupt. If its happening to other users it will likely need doing for each account.

just a moment ago i got something on my mind, is the folder a zip folder or any other type of special folder? zip folder sometimes look similar to regular folder but need unzip program to open. to need a special program just for opening a folder is really weird.

yes, system restore works most of the time. after that, to be even more secure, just create a system image backup of your partition. that will be handy in case there are numerous changes to the system n it's hard to know the cause.
