Hi

I have recently installed a printer but am having trouble getting it to work properly.

My computer is windows 7 bit 64. My printer is canon pixma ip8500. I've downloaded the device driver and the ad on module from the canon website (both for windows 7 64 bit).

Whenever I try to print ... 2 files appear in the printer spool ... FP00000 Shockwave flash object (.SPL) and FP00000.SHD SHD file.

The printer then hangs and doesn't print anything. According to the printer status it is "collecting printer status".

I have cleared the printer spool but when I try to print again these two files reappear and the printer hangs. I can't print anything.

This happens with everything I've tried to print ... word docs and photos.

I installed the same printer on my partner's computer windows 7 bit 32 without any difficulty.

Does anyone have a solution?

Cheers

Just one quick question, do typical .txt .doc type files print, or is this a general printer error not simply related to just the aforementioned filetypes?

I think the .spl and .shd files are propreitary canon formats. For the hang problem, try uninstalling the printer software and reinstalling. Also look around for newer drivers.

Hi

I completely uninstalled everything to do with the printer off the computer.

I downloaded the software mypr-win-2.8.0 and the printer driver add on module.

I turn my computer off and then booted it. I plugged in the usb printer and the computer couldn't detect the device.

I installed the software and the printer driver add on module.

But I still can't get the computer to recognise the printer. In the software I downloaded there is an option to Diagnose and Repair printer. I clicked on that and it says that the printer driver for the printer was not detected.

Is there anything else I should be doing? Or am I doing something wrong?

Cheers

Printer softwares have a certain routine- first do this, then do that, now plug in the printer blah blah. Try following that scrupolously.

Another thing you can try is to extract the printer software to a folder on the hard drive (use winrar or something similar), then go to device manager. If the printer is detected there with a yellow mark, point it to the folder. Otherwise, scan for new hardware, if nothing turns up add the printer manually.

Hi

this is the response I received from Canon. I've been able to successfully install the printer now ... but my original problem remains ... I can't print anything. I can't even check the printer status without it hanging.

I've written back to canon to see if they can come up with a solution.

Cheers

Thank you for writing to Canon USA product support. We value you as a
Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you. We
sincerely regret any difficulty setting up your printer with Windows 7.

The MyPrinter and Add-on Module available for download from Canon are
not drivers, the Windows 7 printer driver for your iP8500 printer is
provided by Microsoft as part of Windows 7 and Windows Update and
includes all the necessary files.

To install your iP8500 printer, connect the printer directly to the
computer, and then power the printer on. Windows 7 should detect the
printer, and the driver should be installed automatically as long as
there is an Internet connection.

If you experience an issue with the printer being detected, you may try
disconnecting the USB cable, then the power cord from the printer and
shutting down your computer for 30 seconds. Restart the computer to the
Desktop, connect the printer cable and power on the printer to let
Windows detect and install the printer.

Please note, you can check the Devices and Printers window to see if the
printer driver is installed. Open Printers by clicking the Start
button, clicking Devices and Printers.

We do sincerely hope this information is helpful to you regarding your
iP8500 printer. If you need further assistance, please respond back at
your earliest convenience and describe any issues that occur, and what
is listed under Devices and Printers.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Hi

I am not having much joy with getting the printer to work properly.

I have uninstalled the device driver (in device manager and devices & printers), I have uninstalled all programs ... I have even purged my registry of everything remotely related to canon and pixma printers.

I have plugged in the usb for the printer and powered it up. I have let it download the most up to date driver. Computer says all looking good all hooked up ... ready to go.

I try to print and the print job hangs. In the printer spool are two files .shd and .spl (invariably 64 kb and 0kb) ... these seem to be causing a block with the printing.

I go to the troubleshooter. It looks into the problem and prints the document that I've been unsucessfully trying to print ... and tells me that there was a document in the queue and now I can print.

I try to print again and the whole thing happens all over again.

I have installed the add on module (which apparently is just to improve colour) and other software (My printer v2.80etc). None of it helps me print.

I have uninstalled the printer driver and associated files at least 20 times ... and reinstalled. The printer just won't work.

I have contacted canon. They were very helpful but their only advice was uninstall everything and reinstall it. I've done that ... it doesn't fix the problem.

Is there anyone out there who has any idea how to fix this problem? If so it would be great to hear from you.

The most annoying thing is that I connected the printer to my partner's computer windows 7 32 bit in a few seconds ... I've spent hours and hours trying to connect the printer to my windows 7 64 bit without success.

Cheers

There is a secondary print service related to 64 printing, the name of it is escaping me at this exact moment (something to the effect of syswow64 perhaps someone else knows it off the top of their head. I'm thinking it's not activating on your system for some reason.

Sorry I just woke up and my brain apparently hasn't turned on yet.

can't see syswow64 listed anywhere in the task manager. There are only 2 things which might be related to that folder that I can see splwow64.exe and amicosinglun64.exe

the rest of the stuff is (.exe *32) or just (.exe)

something interesting...
when I plugged the usb without internet ... the driver still installed. this must mean that despite my efforts there must be a driver package lurking on the computer somewhere. I've uninstalled it from device manager ... and the icon in devices and printers and the driver from there too ... and also any programs in programs and features.
However when I try to delete the file from devices and printers it says deleted ip8500.
but ... failed to remove package prnca00m.inf access is denied.

do I need to delete the driver package as well? if so can someone please tell me how.
Thank you

OK heres what you need to do to get your printer recognised again, this is caused by an issue with your print spooler.

1. Goto C://windows/system32/spool/printers, there will be a couple of files in there, delete everything in this folder.

2. Restart your print spooler service under control panel/ admin tools/ services

3. reinstall your printer

This should correct the issue. If this keeps happening change your printing preferences to tell your printer not to start printing until the last page has spooled. Hopefully this will resolve the issue completely, also make sure you have the latest 64 bit drivers installed directly from the manufacturers website. This wont harm and will rule out future driver issues also. Hope this helps
