Problem reading HD on Win7.

Hey.

I have recently installed Win7 RC on my notebook.
My WinVista wasn't loading the logon screen anymore...
So I partitioned the primary HD using a BootCD into 2 and installed Win7 on the blank partition, set it as primary and changed the drive letter to C:\.

It is working alright...
But I can't read the other partition when I'm on Win7.

If I boot through the CD I can read all the files on MS-DOS prompt. They're all there.

I tried to grant admistrator permissions to this partition and Win7 read ALL THE FILES, but I can't open it. It says "E:\ is not accessible. Access is denied."

What do I do?

Access is denied because you are not an admin of the vista group from win 7. In vista you have an admin account and your a member ( i assume). When you in win 7 you can probably see the other partition but not access the files. the solution is from win 7 to go to the xp partition right click the volume and go to property>security>add your name to the admin group

That should work. If not there are a bunch of post in SF that also deal with the same issue.

Well, it didn't.

I'm guaranteeing full access to every user I find here on the notebook
but I still can't make it read the partition.

I've even guaranteed annonymous access... And nothing.

what I would do is take ownership of the E: partition (using an administrator account) and then give the "Everyone" and/or "Authenticated Users" group full access. Make sure to check the options that force inheritance before you press apply, so that all folders will get the same permissions.

P.S. - To do all of that, you should use the "Advanced" button under the Security tab.

you need to take "ownership" of the files. its under the advanced tab as well. NTFS can be a royal pain.

Yeah, that was it.
I gave ownership to the files on the partition and I could open it!

glad to help, I had the same issue when i had to do a repair install of vista, and it whacked my username/paswords. Even if you use the same password it creates a different unique code that is tied to the files, with ntfs the only way to get aroudn that is to take ownership of them, as that resets it.
