I installed Windows Update Readiness Tool because I was getting the error 80073712 when Windows was attempting to install an update every time I shut off the computer. The Windows Update Readiness Tool did not solve this error but now I can't 'Safely Remove Hardware' when I need to disconnect my external hard drive.
P.S. - I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 bit desktop.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx Britton 30; I opened the link and tried four of the five methods suggested. Method five apparently is just short of reinstalling Windows. I'm not prepared to go to that length right now. Being that this upgrade is for Internet Explorer 10 and I use Firefox I may just 'turn off' Internet Explorer 10 but I am afraid that if I do this I may loose some default programs, what do you think??

The error that you are getting indicates possible major corruption in one of the registry hives.
It's quite likely that the problem is preventing proper installation of ANY updates, and not just IE10.
