Problem using Easy File Transfer

We just upgraded our XP to Windows 7 Ultimate x86. First when he installed it he chose the custom option. Then the Easy File Transfer kept giving a "file already open" error. He reinserted the disc to try a clean install & it went through an install process without asking for custom or new.

After that he tried again to use the Easy File Transfer to restore the files & now it just says "can't open file". We followed the instructions - what are we missing?

Also, we're concerend there are other older versions of MS Office (2003). Will this install of 7 have overwritten/removed them or do we need to do something to remove them from our hard drive?

There are two types of install, clean (custom) or upgrade. From your commens I am not sure which one you chose. If you chose clean, everything is gone; programs, applications, mail, everything. If you chose upgrade, everything should still be there.

Based upon MS propaganda upgrades are not possible from XP to W7. When they say not possible, I do not know if it really is not possible or the result would be a Frankenstein OS.

My advice if you are not happy with the outcome, try again and this time do a clean install

As far as easy transfer, apparantly, something is corrupted or not working correctly. You may have lost the files. Go to your C: drive check for a folder windows.old, that is your old files and you may be able to restore some files from that.

Thanks Richard, I'll find out which install type was actually performed & go from there. So far the Windows 7 is working fine so I'd think it is possible. I'll keep my fingers crossed it stays that way!
