Hi there

Does anyone else have a problem entering 3 digit values into the Windows 7 color picker?? It's bizarre - I can only enter 2, and geta sytem ping if I try to type a third. I even tried reducing my font size, but that's clearly not it.

Any suggestions??

Cheers
Robin

Where are you getting the color picker to come up? In a program? A control panel?

Wherever the standard Windows color picker is used, so in any program that uses that picker, or if trying to change a system related color - anything. No problem with 3rd party pickers in programs that have them - eg the picker used by the freebie Stickies.

Please provide the steps you use to get there. I can't think of anywhere offhand that has a color picker where I can enter RGB values.

Well, you can manually enter color values anywhere you have the option to change colors, by choosing the "Other" or "More" option under the standard colors in the grid to open the full color picker. So, typical steps would be, for example, if you wanted to change the Windows text color to pale pink or something not standard, you'd take these steps:

Personalize
Advanced appearance settings
Desktop - Color 1
Click on the color box a mini-picker opens, showing only 16 colors
Click on "Other" at the bottom of the mini-picker
The default Windows color picker opens
Here you can either choose a color using the sliders or enter exact numeric values in the HSL or RGB boxes

This is where my problem is - I can't enter a value higher than 99.

Ok, I tried it out and it seem to work ok.

I apologise for asking this but you do know that the legal range is 0 to 255? I/.e if you typed in 45 then tried to type in a third number it WOULD fail (Actually it should immediately switch to 255), but 213 should work.

In fact try typing in 455 and see what happens, it should switch to the max value of 255.

If that isn;t it. then I'm at a loss too :(

fseal, you are right.

Most probably Hoods is talking about this software ; Windows 7 itself does not have any native software like that. Its meant for use in web creations. For that, its works good (Hex number) and its freeware; I have not tried it for desktop.

Hoods - okay, see where you are. By larger than 99, do you mean 100 or 991? As fseal mentioned, that's a one byte hexadecimal field with a max value of X'FF' or 255 decimal.

Thanks, guys - glad to know I am not the only one confused. :)

Just to let you know, I have been doing digital graphic design for 25 years or so, so the whole color space and 0-255 thing is what I work with all the time and this is a first.

Windows 7 itself does not have any native software like that.
I am talking about the regular old square Windows color picker that has been around since the year dot - the one that's invoked by anything from MS Paint to desktop color management options, not a 3rd party program. (MS Office has a different picker - looks like a honeycomb - that works as expected.) Various softwares have their own color pickers, but many, such as Photoshop, still give you the option to use the MS Windows picker - though why anyone would WANT to use anything that outmoded and basically primitive beats me. :sarc: If I change my Photoshop preference to Windows, the problem is the same. All other color pickers in other software I use are fine, but as I have no choice but to use the WINDOWS one to make changes to things like desktop colors I am stuck with mouse movements for those particular occasions. !@#@!@!^$

To try to clarify: I can't type a 3rd digit (100-255) into any of the color picker boxes. Even if a 3-digit number is in the box, I can't replace that with a 30-digit nuber of my choosing. My computer just beeps at me. It's too bizarre. Maybe something I have installed has caused this bug, but as I am using all the software I have always used I have NO clue what.

****

Just wanted to thank everyone who offered suggestions - in the end I decided to restore my clean system image/backup, and that has fixed the problem. Now it's a matter of monitoring things I install to see what might have caused this bizarre thing to happen! So far, no clue. Anyway, thanks again!

I changed my default system font in XP (to Segoe or Tahoma or Verdana ) and had exactly the same issue. The only way I could get round it was by modifying the colour pickers dialog window and making the '0-255' entry box wider! Seeing as how I was batch changing multiple system files anyway this was just another one to add to the list.
The system file (in WinXP) in question was comdlg32.dll
The dialog number was 1552
The script line I changed was from
CONTROL "", 1184, "ToolbarWindow32", 0x50012B4C, 4, 22, 58, 208 , 0x00000200
to
CONTROL "", 1184, "ToolbarWindow32", 0x50012B4C, 4, 22, 58, 240 , 0x00000200.
260 being the max size I could stretch the window to (normally 240).
The same sort of thing can be found in the first two dialog entries in Win 7's comdlg32.dll.mui in the C:\Windows\System32\en-US folder.
But, as you say, would it be worth it??
I posted to mainly to let you know, you're not alone/going mad!! ;)

YAY! A fellow nutter. Hmm - I changed my Vista font to Segoe and sometimes couldn't see the entire number/words in certain (probably badly programmed, I think) apps such as Photoshop plugins, but this problem I detailed here was different in that I couldn't actually type that @$#!@^ing 3rd digit. Anyway, thanks for the heads up - I have made a note, for future reference!

Am I right in thinking Windows 7 uses Segoe by default, or did I do that?? :) I haven't had much time to tamper with 7 (2 weeks or so since I isntalled it) or even to get to know its foibles yet - but it's quite likely I DID, as we old women are compulsive fiddlers.

I never did figure it out. Changing fonts/sizes back made no difference once it had "set in". I could always only see 2 and a bit numbers and unable to do anything with the "bit".
It was like someone had locked a "space" into the first place in every entry box.

Any answers?

Hello,
I just started seeing this issue and have not found any definitive answer to correct it.
Here is a screencast I put together.

Webform Builder color dialog issue - soundcreations's library

I tried hacking the comdlg32.dll in Windows 7 but could not find the dialog entry.

Any help would be so appreciated.
Best,
Simeon
