Problem with Import from other program or file Outlook 2010 / Win7

I want to import from another file, so did: file, open, import, selected "open from another program or file" and pressed next.
Nothing happens.
Same thing if I try to export, I select "export to a file" nothing happens.
What could be the problem?

I want(ed) to import mail and contacts from WIndows Mail. I might also want to import contacts from excell. My contacts are a bit of a mess so need to do some maintenace, which is easier in excell I would think.
But: is it relevant? Just to avoid confusion: I am not looking for alternative solutions, I have already imported via a different route. Just want to understand why the normal way does not work..
