Folks, I'm trying to update iTunes, and I just realized that my program is messed up, probably because of some registry cleaner I've used...

I can't repair, uninstall or even reinstall it.

It always shows these errors:

Then this one:

Then it says it didn't alter the system, and doesn't install.

I don't want to format my PC because of this...

I've tried installing/repairing/uninstalling in safe mode, and my account has administrator privileges, and I've tried the "Run as admin" option, no luck. I tried a system restore too, but no luck as the latest restore point is from 6 days ago.

So, do you guys have any idea of how to solve this?

Thanks in advance.

There following quote is a solution posted in the below thread. Give it a try.
problem with iTunes install - Microsoft Answers

I had the exact same problem and error message as you guys but fixed it just now. I am not an expert or even trained in any way. I just worked it through until I got everything to install. If you try this, please backup your registry first.

Anyway, here's what I did.

First I toally uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Software updater, ____-anything with Apple in the name.

I opened regedit using "run as administrator".

I then went to the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\108B43C0CEA676640B35306AE7D24051

...and selected the folder DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8

Right click & choose permissions
click advanced, and then the owner tab
type "administrators" in current owners field and check th box to replace the owner on subcontainer and volumes

(Note: I did this because I had another key with permission issues after I fixed the original onelisted above)

Apply settings and then click permissions tab. Once again, add "administrators" to the list of permission entries, then click edit and check all permission boxes. Also click the 2 bottom boxes concerning the inheritable permissions.

Click OK

Now back on the main permissions tab, choose administrators in the group or user name window and then check full control and read checkboxes. Click OK.

Back in the main regedit window, you should now see keys in the right pane for each subfolder in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8

On the menu bar click file > exit

I downloaded and installed the new combined iTunes9 and Quicktime from apple.

Everything worked fine. I hope this helps.

I had tried those before, and no luck.

I chose to format, which took much less time than working around that problem... It's fine now.

You can delete/lock this now.

Thanks for your help.

Don't worry, it was a serious problem.

I think formatting took less time than trying to work around this.
