Problem with RAM

Have an oldish Vista I have just stuck 7 onto and I bought some Corsair 667Mhz 2 x 2GB sticks to replace the 2 x 1GB sticks but the machine refuses to even power up with the Corsair installed.

Any ideas please??

I have noticed that the Corsair is PC2 5300 and the originals are PC 5300 sticks (SODIMM) and I cannot find a definitive answer for the difference between PC and PC2 prefixes.

As I understand it the PC is DRR RAM, PC2 is DDR2 RAM, and PC3 is DDR3 RAM.
They are not backward or forward compatible.

Yeah TVeblen IO checked the specs and the PC and PC2 5300 are one and the same beast am going to try it again - the PC2 5300 as they both (PC and PC2) state they are 667Mhz sticks.

You wouldn't read about it flipped them in again (the PC2 5300) and the thing is flying the only thing I di differently was go into the BIOS to se what it was showing!

Hum what I think the prefixes are TV are that Samsung mark theirs PC 5300 and Corsair PC2 5300 as they both run at 667Mhz and that is DDR2 RAM as Speccy is showing me 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 @ 332MHz (5-5-5-15) - the same as the 2GB Samsungs showed up.

Why the Corsairs didn't run the first time in I have no idea like I said the only thing different I did was to check the BIOS the second time to see what was there.

And they aren't physically compatible. DDR and DDR2 each have a notch, but in different locations. A DDR2 SODIMM won't fit in a DDR slot, and vice-versa.

Hum bobkn what threw me was why the prefixes were different probably just a makers quirk and that it didn't work until I went into the BIOS then into boot.

Oh well it's flying now so all's well eh?

+1 TV it really is pretty straight forward I would have thought
