Solved Problem with Realtek sound.

Hi.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my computer and when everything was set up and good to go, I started up iTunes. When no sound came out, I noticed that the default sound system had changed to the Digital Output thing.

I unplugged and plugged the speakers back in, and the pop up message came up, saying that something had been plugged into the audio jack, but when I went into iTunes again, I still didn't get any sound. I then went into the Sound section in the Control Panel, and it said that my speakers weren't plugged in. The drivers, according to Windows, are completely up to date, and I've restarted twice already, but to no avail.

Can anyone help me out?

EDIT: I tried installing the new Realtek drivers, but it didn't fix it. Now when I plug the speakers in, the bubble doesn't show up. It's not registering them at all. Help!

First off, I've never used iTunes but it is possible it behaves like Winamp. In that I mean it may be able to choose the output from within the program and not rely on Windows' default selection. So check that out once your audio is back.

Now, right click the speaker tray icon and choose playback devices. Right click in the middle of the popup, on any device or open area, doesn't matter. Then choose show disabled devices and show disconnected devices until they're both checked and active.

See if your previous default audio shows up now. Set it as the default device if it does.

In your sound control panel> click on the speaker icon then properies> make sure that the digital only box isn't checked. Also if you play something with sound you should see the green bars going up and down, this means that it is trying to play sound you just have to configure it properly. Checkl back. Fabe

Okay, well, I right clicked the speaker icon and went through everything torrentg told me to do. The option of my speakers was there, but it didn't allow me to set it as the default device. It was grayed out. I couldn't find anything in iTunes to let me select what speakers I used..

As for thefabe, I went into the properties and the digital thing is checked, but that's only because I can't check the previous default. When I played something on iTunes, the bar beside the digital fluctuated in volume, but I still couldn't hear a thing.

Unsure exactly what is going on, but how about trying this?

Use the device manager to uninstall all driver(s) for audio and choose to delete files as it does. Leave anything related to your video card alone, like ATI High Definition Audio Device or similar.

Then boot into safe mode and install the driver as if it was the first time you have. Reboot into normal mode and check the device manager to see what is going on. If it looks good, play something in iTunes.

I went through a simular problem today and I did not fully understand the popup at first. I think it remaps the ports so make sure the correct speaker is selected befor you click OK. To get the popup just unplug a speaker then plug it back in.

Then right click the speaker icon beside the clock and select audio devices, highlight speakers then properties and go to the advanced tab, press the restore defaults button, apply and OK. Next highlight speakers again then the configure button and setup and test your speaker configuration.

I'm such an idiot!

So, while I was working on this last night, in the relative darkness, I was under the impression that there were only two jacks in the back of my base unit, the green one for sound and the pink one for microphones.

Turns out there's a blue one too, and that's what my speaker cable was plugged into. So I put the cable into the green jack and voila! Instant sound!
