If I go into my Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

and try to apply items, such as "turn on network discovery" and hit save changes...when I come back in, its back to off.
Nothing seems to save when I apply them.

Also, when I go into Homegroups, I get a message "homegroup is not ready yet"

Do I have a service turned off that could be causing these issues?

I'm the last person to give any advice on networks, since I'm still struggling with mine, but I would check by turning off the firewall and see if it may have been interfering.

gizbug;

If you are using the "Home Network" location (default settings), "Network Discovery" is on by default. On my system, it shows to be off and when I select it to on and save, there is no change. My system works fine anyway.

Choosing a network location

We might be able to help further if you described your network - how many computers, what os, what router, cable or DSL, etc.

Cheers!

Did you disable any services? If you did, did you make a record of the one's you disabled? If not here is a list of the default service settings. Windows 7 Services.zip

I recommend that you set each service to its default value and then try working with networking and groups again.

If you are going to set up a Homegroup this guide should help fix any problems you might encounter along the way. Pay attention to the registry setting adjustments because that is probably the problem you are seeing now.

Is your SSDP Discovery service running?

Network Discovery will not turn on if the service is not running.

Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services -> SSDP Discovery
Double click, set to autmatic, click OK then reboot.
