Problematic problem with sleep and lid

When I put my computer to sleep, and close the lid, every time I lift my case with the laptop in it the lid opens and therefore my laptop resumes from sleep. When I open my case the laptop is so hot the hard disk stops working and I need to turn off.
Sometimes it's more severe than that.

How do I prevent resume from sleep when opening the lid? SO that only clicking on mouse/keyboard will send signal to resume from sleep.

Always shutdown your computer normally, or put it in hibernation mode when travelling. In sleep-mode the system is still running!! When riding on a bike, in a car or just walking with a suitcase .... switch off computer.

So forget sleep mode in this situation!

But I have never heard about something like "awake from sleep when opening lid". There's a close lid action but not a open lid action afaik

The problem is that there is no way to prevent the laptop from waking up when the lid is opened.

The hibernation and shutting down, are used when you are not going to use the computer for long time(at night), sleep is for moving or traveling.

I won't shutdown, nor will I hibernate my laptop for short periods of time - 5-10 minutes which is usually the case. So that's why I put it to sleep so when I resume from sleep it won't harm the components(which are when you turn off and on), and if I could avoid doing that I would by not letting opening the lid resume from sleep-mode.

I try and avoid discussions about how to use a computer - you are gonna do what you are gonna do regardless of what anyone says. So we will stick to how you want to do it. (And no - it is not obvious to anyone else who does things differently)

The first issue is: why is the lid opening so easily after it is closed? It should not just flip open. Especially if it is inside a laptop case. Has it been damaged?

One easy solution to that would be a big elastic band, velcro strip, or just some tape.
Would a solution like that be sufficient? Or are you looking for more?

If I'm understanding your problem, you want to keep the lid secure while the laptop is in transit so the micro switch that controls sleep mode isn't activated. What about two small hook and loop tabs at the front corners that would keep the lid closed? I did that to a laptop I had with the same problem and it worked great.

Or a heavy duty, large capacity rubber band to keep the lid and base together. These large bands can be found in office supply stores and are used to secure large files, etc. They're about 1/2" - 1" wide x 6" - 12" long.

Neither suggestion is very elegant but I think it would help. and if I've misunderstood, my apologies.

Well I just guess anyone knows that turning on and off completely harms the components...

The lid was always like this, I can't lock the lid so it opens easily when I move the laptop, I really should have thought about it before buying that.


I will consider your ideas, but I have been looking for an option to prevent the laptop from waking up when the lid is opened.

As marsmimar stated, there is a micro switch for the lid that triggers the function. What the laptop does when the lid is opened is a hardware specific function (depends on what the manufacturer decided). Unfortunately the function is not configurable by the OS, as far as I know.

There might be a setting in the BIOS that would change the lid open function, but I don't ever recall seeing one. Won't hurt to check.

Once that micro switch gets loose it becomes a problem that is not easily corrected. You may need to adapt.
