Problems Installing Windows

In order to make my computer boot from DVD, I had to disable my hard drive because even if I disabled it from the boot menu, it would not load the disk.

But when I finally just disabled the hard drive in the BIOS, it worked!...kind of, well, now I don't see my hard drive (I only have one) to install windows 7 on...

So I play around a bit and I find a cmd prompt through repair, anything I can do to turn it on from there?..

Help appreciated thanks!

No, you won't be able to re-enable the hard drive from a command prompt once the BIOS has handed off to the Operating System (installation disk in this case).

If you fill in your system specs, it will make it easier for others to make suggestions.

System specs might help us decide whether to advise trying to install from a USB flash drive, etc., if it simply won't boot the DVD drive with the hard drive enabled.

Bios boot order

DVD/CD

Floppy

Also during bios boot up some computers let you hit f8 or f12 key to get a boot menu, so you can choose boot from DVD.

How did you burn your install DVD ? 32 bit or 64 bit ? what build & version

From the BIOS, booting off a USB is not possible, only three options are floppy, hard disk, or cd-rom(dvd) - I thought about installing it through my hard disk but since I want to do a clean install I don't think that will work

EDIT: I used imgburn to burn a 32 bit disk, I disabled all the other boot options so the only one would be the cd(dvd) but it still refuses to CHECK(LOAD) the DVD if the hard disk if enabled

Even when I force chose boot from disk it would still ignore it (using f12)

How big is your HD, and how many partitions?

Yes this is an older computer, its a pentium 4 3.0 ghz 1 gig ram, if you need anytihng else just ask! (it is windows xp sp2 right now)

so only xp is on the drive?

Do you want to do a clean install or upgrade? clean is better.

Yes, it is a good burn, its running right now actually with my hard drive disabled and YES! i want a good ol clean install, if everytihng goes wrong, I have a brand new spankin copy for XP SP3 lol, but lets try 7 first

I'm clicking custom, then it shows my hard drives, but I can't delete my old hard drives (my old crap)
