Problems Networking Win 7 to XP

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm trying to network a Windows 7 PC with an XP PC.

The XP machine can see and access the Win 7 PC, but the Win 7 does not see the XP machine. When I ping the xp machine by computer name, it says "could not find host "Name". Please check the name and try again".

When I ping the XP machine by IP address, it sends and receives a response.

I've turned off the firewalls on both PC's, gone through the Network Share options (Discovery - on, sharing -on, public sharing - on, 128-encryption - on, password - off). Win 7 machine is set to "Work Network", both PC's are in same "Workgroup".

I assume that you're using a router/switch Are the IP addresses dynamic or static?
What happens when you type NETWORK into the start button search bar?
What is displayed in the window that opens when you click on 'network'?

tman69 - Today when I rebooted both computers and the dsl modem/router/switch, and then followed your instructions, the win 7 machine now sees the xp machine. When I try opening the xp machine, I get an error message.

"Windows cannot access \\xpcomputer
Check spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network."

The error code is 0x8007035 - The network path was not found"

Try doing this registry adjustment on the Win 7 machine with the problem. Also be sure and turn off simple file sharing on the XP machine. Which ever A/V software you have installed can also cause this problem to occur.

You may need to uninstall your A/V to fix this problem but try the registry adjustment first.

I suspect chev65 is right and that it is related to the A/V - Norton Internet Security. Although both machines are running Norton.

It really, seems to me that it shouldn't be this difficult or frustrating.

It really, seems to me that it shouldn't be this difficult or frustrating.

Only if there is an A/V involved in the mix. There is a way to configure the Norton firewall to allow for sharing but I'm not up with every A/V and how to configure them.

chev65, Norton has a View Network Security Map and a Manage Network, but the documentation is slim and not very helpful.

Ok, so the point of this for me, was to have access to files (docs, pictures, music, ect.) on the XP machine while on the Win 7 machine. So I decided to transfer the files from XP PC to Win 7 PCe using Windows Easy Transfer.

And it worked, using the network connection (not a transfer cable).

You may not know the answer to this, but how come the Win 7 PC can access the XP hard drive through the network connection w/Easy Transfer, but the Win 7 PC cannot access the XP hard drive or even see the XP PC when using the network alone?

I've set up fire sharing between my Win7 pc and my old XP machine about thirty times back when the Win 7 beta's were coming out one after the other. Never had a problem with it honestly. If your having a problem it's either the permissons on the XP machine or it's Norton.

Setting up sharing permissions in XP is not very simple. Read more about it in this link> How to configure file sharing in Windows XP

First thing I would do is uninstall Norton on both machines...After that I would set up a Workgroup on the Win 7 machine, then I would disable simple file sharing on the XP machine and then run the network set up wizard on the XP machine using the same Workgroup name as I used when setting up the Win 7 machine.

It sometimes helps to use the same user name and password on both machines but you should not need to do that if password protected sharing is turned off on the Windows 7 machine. It's best to turn off password protected sharing on the Windows 7 machine.

• Turn off password-protected sharing. To turn off password-protected sharing, follow these steps:
• Open Advanced sharing settings by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type network, click Network and Sharing Center, and then, in the navigation pane, click Change advanced sharing settings.

• Click to expand the current network profile.
• Under Password protected sharing, click Turn off password protected sharing, and then click save changes. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I would also make sure that both machines have permissions to access the other, you may need to add "Everyone" to the "share with" list on both machines. I would also install SP3 on the XP machine and install the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) hotfix "link below" which allows your XP machine to be visable on the Win 7 network map.
