Problems shutting down computer

I have great difficulties shutting my laptop down with Windows 7. It just sits on the "windows is shutting down" page for all eternity and eventually I just have to manually turn off the computer.

If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Advice? Definitely. It sounds like a program you are running is causing the hang.

My first suspicion is the anti-virus. Try disabling/uninstalling it for the time being.

Here's another thing you can try. In Task Manager (Ctrl-Shift-Esc), in the Processes tab, End half of the processes. Make a list of which ones you ended.

If it still hangs, you can suspect that the rogue process is in the other half. If it works, you can start trying to narrow down exactly which process is causing the trouble.

Edit: One more question I should ask. After you reboot, if you immediately restart again, does it still hang?

Using a variation of Jonathans approach, called a clean boot, try this
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

You could, also, boot in safe mode. If it works in safe mode, it is pretty sure that the problem originates from a process not closing properly.

Have a look at this Tutorial from Vista Forums to make sure that you haven't got your Virtual Memory Paging File set to clear at shutdown. It's exactly the same for W7.

Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and enter: shutdown -f -s -t 0 and press enter. Does the machine shutdown correctly? If it does you have a program or a service that is not shutting down correctly and the machine is stuck waiting for it to shutdown properly.

Thanks everyone. My computer now shuts down properly. Now I am off to the Network forum as I upgraded my modem and cannot connect to my wireless network.
