Right, I have a bit of a problem starting up my windows 7 pc. An error comes up saying corrupt file. I have tried replacing the hard drive with a version of windows XP which does work on other computers but it doesn't seem to want to work on the Win7 PC. I am guessing there must be something wrong with some of the hardware, however Ubuntu does start up without any problems. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance,

Gareth Chalmers

Thanks folks,

First I tried the troubleshooting steps. The computer would not startup in Safe Mode. And the Defender from step 2 "could not find an install id windows". I have tried all the other steps and none of them seem to detect windows. I tried my hard drive in another pc and I can view everything that is on there including all my files etc. Is there a way of checking the windows installation? I have tried booting from it on the other PC but it doesn't work - probably be a hard ware issue though I would think. (old pc - 64bit windows).

Ubuntu is installed alongside my XP.

Have you gone through all steps in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219533-troubleshooting-windows-7-failure-boot.html ?

There are other boot security scanning programs available there than just the Windows Defender Offline. Also, there are steps there to repair your boot manager and even to backup your data. There are steps for making sure the correct partition is marked active to make sure the system is seeing the Windows installation.
