I have a dvd drive that to this day is holding my copy of fist of legend hostage. It sits on a shelf in a closet until I figure out how to get it out of there without damaging it.

anyhow...
It's sounding like its time to replace the drive strange noises indicate stripped or bad gears in the door mechanism. Laptop dvd drives are sadly a tad more expensive than one for a desktop but they are not generally difficult to remove/install.
