Hi all,

Had a recent meltdown on my HP laptop running windows 7. In an effort to recover all my important files I took the HD from the fried laptop and connected to my old XP notebook via an external docking station.

So now I can read the drive but when I try to access my documents etc, access is denied.

SO Help!!.. Can I reset the permissions in XP to read the folders that were created in WIN 7?

If not, how can I retrieve my data from this drive?

Thanks

Hello and welcome leeso Mate I just make a bootable Ubuntu disk set the BIOS to boot from the optical let the Ubuntu boot up and use the TRY version not the INSTALL.

You need to download Ubuntu and save to downloads . The use Imgburn to make a bootable disk or stick whichever you prefer I like a disk because I lose stuff in sticks having do many:)

I think you could also use the Windows disk burning feature though I am not sure about XP?

When that (Ubuntu) is up on he screen you will find all the drives attached to the machine and be able to open them up to retrieve data. Well I must ad that some data is not able to be retrieved but stuff like documents and pics are.

Download Ubuntu Desktop | Ubuntu

The Official ImgBurn Website

An alternative is use a USB to SATA adaptor on a 7 machine but it depend on what you have access to. See pic for the adaptor

You should be able to recover any Windows files using a Live Linux CD/DVD/USB.
It's one the main purposes I use Linux for.
It means that I don't have to mess around with Windows permissions.

It probably wont be possible to recover "Bit Locker" encrypted files though.

So you don't have access to T:\user\<yourname> (assuming T is drive letter of old win7 drive)?
Goto T:\users , right click <your name> ->properties->security->advanced->owner. change the owner to yourself and propagate to all subcontainers. Press OK a few times.

Goto T:\users , right click <your name> ->properties->security->advanced-> add yourself and give you FULL CONTROL. Again propogate to all subcontainers. Press OK a few times.

No security tab

Hi,

Thanks for the replies so far.

Problem with this method is that we I right click the folder for the properties, only General, Sharing and Customise tabs are visible. There is no Security tab available.

Any suggestions?

Try click the sharing tab and check the share this folder box, click the add and put everyone, under permissions give read and write permissions. You can undo it once you get your info, if you like.

I had a similar problem with my older laptop.

Have you tried the Ubuntu Live disc or Bootable thumb drive? This works for a lot of things that Windows won't allow you to do. It's one of the many ways I recover files when I'm at school and work in the tech office.

As for the bit locker files, a suggestion is, don't use BitLocker. I suggest you try TrueCrypt in the future, due to its universal aspects vs the BitLocker's local restrictions.

Original Credit goes to the OP of the Ubuntu.
