Hi people, I'm having trouble upgrading my dell xps m1330 from Ultimate vista to 7 pro. I realize that I probably purchased the wrong version but it won't even allow me to do clean install. It goes into 'copying temporary files" forever, then finally to install option screen of either upgrading (which it won't allow me to) or custom which I tried several times after a while it tries to copy files then error message saying "some files corrupted of missing" etc then stops the process, ive installed the upgrade advisor and did what it asked until it passed. Please any advise would be of great help! thanks

Very good start with the upgrade advisor. From that point, I would suggest, disconnect everything other than mouse, monitor and keyboard. Try to clean install again, do not enter your key number, if you get to that point. When installed, try it and enjoy it for a while. Install your programs at that point and use it again. If you are satisfied, at that point, enter your key number. Make a system image and put it in a safe place.

Other suggestions, make sure that your bios is set to plug and play. This is a common problem, hit f12 contiually at start up) F12 works for Dell, other computers use another f key or even delete, check your manual.

If you are using a ISO, reburn at 4x speed.

I don't know if this will help, but it's worth a try.

Before trying to install Windows 7 ....
ATF Cleaner ATF-Cleaner.exe - www.atribune.org
Click "Main" > check 'select all' this first time using it, then click "Empty Selected". Do the same for FireFox or Opera if you use either of those browsers.
Next, go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.

Now download Auslogics Disk Defrag Auslogics - Download Auslogics Disk Defrag
Defrag at least a couple of times.

Restart your computer and see if a "Clean" install will work.

Most all of us agree that an upgrade is not the route to take. It leaves useless files on your system and can cause conflicts.

Save all you Documents, Pictures, contacts, videos, music, etc to a flash drive,

Be aware, you will need to re-install your 3rd party applications.

I had similar problems with a Toshiba notebook.

Download, burn CD and run Dariks Nuke and Boot.

This will completely wipe the hard drive so no remnants of the old OS are present.

Of course, save any important data first.

You can use the upgrade version. Give your key number at the end of the process, not when asked for originally. Whenever you try something like this make a system image, first.

First make a system image of what you have now, so if things go wrong you lose nothing. You can download acronis (30 day free trial), to make the system image.

Put your DVD into the drive

Follow the instructions on the screen

When asked for your key number, just ignore

When you are done, use the OS until you are satisfied.

If satisfied, install programs one at a time and use until you are satisifed that each one works.

If satisfied give your key number. You have 30 days to supply your number

Thanks for the heads up.

I previously would zero HD using GWScan (Data Lifeguard) CD every time I did an install, but was convinced by nearly unanimous advice that this is overkill.

This may be what many who are stalling when installing need.

Win7 has backup imaging built in, but until you get it installed the best free Imaging App is Macrium Reflect. Create an image and store externally so you can reimage your HD and start over at any time - just reimage HD from backup using Linux CD provided.

Installing an Upgrade to formatted metal requires an easy workaround: http://community.winsupersite.com/b...-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-the-answer.aspx

Or you can just run an Upgrade install over your new installation from the desktop and it will accept the key then. Both accomplish the same thing: simulating an underlying OS to allow Upgrade to accept the key.
