product key transfer?

I had a computer I built start slowing down a few months ago, so I rebuilt and purchased a new windows 7 key. However I was wondering if I could install windows 10 on a new htpc and use my old windows 7 product key for authorization? That key is no longer in use because I got rid of the computer. I have heard windows 10 does great on low powered devices so I would love to give it a try and my htpc box

As long you bought a retail version of Windows 7 you can transfer the key on to the new system. OEM versions are not transferable. Was your version a boxed retail version?

Those are tied to the motherboard they were first installed/activated on. You'd need to buy a new licence for the new device as you can't transfer those.

I didn't think system builder licences on 7 were transferable. Although must admit, I've never actually bought one.

depends on whether it was NSLP.
(basically the N means not tied to a motherboard.)

Interesting, I didn't realise different system builder licences existed.
I assume it's the system builder licences that come in the retail card envelopes that are transferable then?

I think MS needs to update some of their documentation as that is another page which states nothing about transferring System Builder licences. This is why I've never bought one and only bought retail products (licences). They should state that their are two different types as Roy mentioned.

"OEM keys are not-for-resale and may not be transferred to another computer. They may, however, be transferred with the computer if the computer is transferred to new ownership."

Placing that statement just under OEM system builder doesn't make it clear that some are transferable to a different PC. Makes it sound like they have to stay on the same PC but can be transferred to a new owner.
