Hello,
My wife switched on her PC this morning and got an error saying that we needed to run the check disc utility. it would not run properly and when i go to Windows Explorer Program Files (x86), all the other folders show okay with their files. Is there any way I can get the Program Files (x86) folder to show its content or is there any way to recover the contents?

Thanks,
Gerald

Was there anything in there as that is only used by 32 bit program so if all your software is 64 bit it will be empty

The MFT (master file table) has become corrupted. You need to keep trying the check dick until it runs complete to fix the MFT. If you can't get it to run then you will have to connect the drive as an external to another computer and run the check disk. If that's not possible then you'll need to boot to a boot disk such as Hirens Boot CD and then run check disk on the partition.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies,
It ia a partition on the OS drive, I've tried to keep running check disc but it will not do it. I have remembered that I have a copy of Partition Magic and it appears to be able to Rebuild MBR and do a Surface test. Is it worthwhile giving it a try?

If it is on a flash drive or Cd and is bootable. I don't remember if it has the ability to run check disk or not. If you can boot to the Partition Magic, do so and see if it will run check disk on the partition. check disk wont run if the boot drive is in use.

MBR and MFT arer not the same things. If you can boot the computer successfully into the welcome/login screen, then the MBR is okay.

Like the others have already said, if CHKDSK does not run, then ask yourself are you are running the program from an administrators command window. And ask yourself if you are re-booting the computer to enable the CHKDSK to proceed.

Yes, sorry I hadn't realised, if the issue is on the D: drive then that is the correct syntax to use:
chkdsk d: /f

Schedule on both disks, C: and D:

Open a CMD window as Administrator and type:
chkdsk C: /f
It will say your disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next boot = Yes.
then type
chkdsk D: /f
It will say your disk is in use and if you want to unmount = no, schedule to next boot = Yes.
Reboot
Check disk will begin. Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters or bad sectors.

I'm kinda curious what you meant by-

"when i go to Windows Explorer Program Files (x86), all the other folders show okay with their files. Is there any way I can get the Program Files (x86) folder to show its content or is there any way to recover the contents?"

Which folders are you referring to in the first part of it? It implies that you opened the (x86) folder.

It would also be highly unusual for anyone not to have 32 bit software. Is this folder on the C: drive with the OS?

What is (was) the actual error message you're getting?

Sorry to jump in late on this one. You've been getting plenty of good help.

There should be Windows stuff in program files (x86), at the very least - I.E, mail, windows defender, media player, photoviewer, etc.

Hi warmbells,

Schedule on both disks, C: and D:

Open a CMD window as Administrator and type:

chkdsk C: /f

It will say your disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next boot = Yes. Then type:

chkdsk D: /f

It will say your disk is in use and if you want to unmount = no, schedule to next boot = Yes. Reboot

Check disk will begin. Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters or bad sectors.

Did you do what Megahertz07 suggested above?

I wonder if you would follow the instructions here-

Chkdsk Log Location in Windows 7, 8, 10

for Finding Chkdsk Log

Perhaps you would post a screenshot of the log.

You never did tell me which drive your OS is on.
