Solved Program Icons Over Images

Greetings Win7 fans,

I have a nice DVD collection going and to keep track of what I have I used to make a 300x424 image and put it into a .html file. But that was back in the Windows XP days. Earlier this year I got a new computer and in Windows 7 I discovered that I can just put the images in a folder and set it to display Extra Large Images. That worked great until this week when something changed. I don't know what happened to make it change but it did.

Look at the image below, notice how on the right side of the image there is a Firefox icon on the DVD cover image for Hunger Games: Mocking Jay?

I was wondering in anyone could tell me how to turn those icons off? They are driving me batty!

For whatever reason, Firefox is set to open png files. Since png files are images, that should not be the case. Right-click the png file, go to open with, click Choose default program, and select Windows Photo Viewer. The icon should then disappear.

Note, however, that this won't make these kinds of icons go away in all cases - just for images. You can see how the other two images in your screenshot are not obscured by an icon in the bottom right. That's because those other two images are jpg images, which on your system are associated with Windows Photo Viewer. It's just that the third image, a png file, is not.

Those icons you see at the bottom-right indicate which program is set to open that particular file. Windows Photo Viewer seems exempt from that, precisely because it doesn't want to obscure your pictures when browsing through them. I don't know if there's a way to make the icons go away for all file types, but it probably involves a registry tweak. This might be what you're looking for, but I'm not positive.

But again, just doing the steps in my first paragraph should solve this issue for pictures.

By the way, I'm also a sucker for local copies of movies, which is why I'm a huge fan of a small free little application called Eric's Movie Database. It makes your collection more visually appealing than just "files in a hard drive." It also imports information about the movie from iMDB (including the cover image) and you can associate the files on your hard drive with the image in the application so that you can double-click to watch it.

Well, that's the odd thing about this. I may have just not noticed these icons before, because the images in the folder I have my DVD cover images in didn't have any, they just started showing up a few days ago. But nearly all image files I have, including .png files, are opened with Paint Shop Pro. The only file extensions that opinion Firefox are .html, .htm and .php and other typical browser related files. If you notice in the image I posts before, only the 3rd image has the Firefox icon, the other 2 don't have any icons.

At first I though the Firefox icon was showing up because I downloaded (or copied via screenprint) many of the images I have made for DVD cover images. But there are images I made into DVD covers out of my own photographs that I took here on the west coast. So if the icons actually were supposed to be for downloaded images, these images aren't downloads.

But now that I see them, I see that other files have them as well. Such as .pdf files have a red square with an A in it, and that's the Adobe icon. MP4 movies have the Media Player Classic "123" icon. Etc. etc. And it makes sense that those programs show those icons, as those are the programs those files are associated with. But having the Firefox icon for some, but not all images of the same type? That makes no sense at all!

And even stranger, I just tried to make an image that shows that one .png file had the Firefox icon while others did not, to show you I am not totally bonkers (yet!) and the icons are gone, except for the Adobe files. The only thing I have done recently that changed any kind of system file was I installed a new printer, and I updated Nero Wave Editor, but I don't see how either of those could have caused this.

So whatever I changed that enabled those icons seems to have been changed to it's original setting. I don't know how... But I hope it stays that way.

There should be an option in the file explorer Folder and search options - File sub menu - show file icon on thumbnails disable this to remove the icons. This may take some time to propagate so you may want to Rebuild the Icon Cache - Icon Cache - Rebuild to speed things up a little

There is a known issue with thumbnails for PDF files in some installs of Windows 7 depending on which Reader you are using - Especially on 64Bit systems where the add-on to display thumbnails is only available in 32Bit and does not work correctly

Nitro reader was one I seem to remember that had a working thumbnail option in Windows 7 X64 (use a disposable email to "sign in", though the "spam" level is actually quite low )

I updated Nero Wave Editor and it was essentially the same so I didn't associate it with this problem. But it occurred to me later this started about the same time. Later I noticed that there were a couple of programs on my computer that I didn't want that came with it. After I uninstalled them is when the icons on my images disappeared. (Except for the one on .pdf files. I wondered why that one stayed there, but if it's a known issue that would explain it.) So I suppose that one of the free programs that was bundled with the Nero Wave Editor was the culprit. But the images are back to normal now so I'm pleased about that...
