I have a program (Virtual DJ) which up until recently has worked fine, but now opens minimized on the task bar and will not maximize. Task manager shows program is running. PC is a laptop which is not set up for multiple display so window is definitely not open on wrong screen. any suggestions very much appreciated.

Have you tried reinstalling the software in question to make sure it's just not gone wonky on you?

After that I would suggest going to the program file itself (the .exe application file that launches it, not the shortcut) and set it for run as admin and set it for xp compatibility.
It really does sound like the program installation has gone wonky though, or it's even possible your firewall or antivirus has decided to block a service it needs to function.

That's about all the possible causes I have in mind right now though.
For the final thought just snoozing the av/firewall and trying to launch it should let you know if that is the problem or not.

If you are starting the Virtual DJ from a shortcut on the desktop, right click on the program icon and select properties. In the opened properties dialog box select Shortcut tab and click on the dropdown box next to Run and select "Maximised". Click OK to close the dialog box. Now try clicking the shortcut and check whether the program opens maximised.

If the program continues running minimised, Uninstall the program, reboot and reinstall again.

This can be corrected using RegEdit.

To correct this issue, delete the LastPosition or the InitialPosition or one of those "position" string values in the Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Quit your program (such as Photo Editor).
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Locate, and then click the following registry key: you will have to determine which program key to go for. Below is an example for Photo Editor 3.0:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Photo Editor\3.0\Microsoft Photo Editor

  5. Right-click InitialPosition (in the right-side pane), and then click Delete.
  6. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete this value.
  7. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
  8. Reopen your application (such as Photo Editor).
This HELP was found in one of the MS forums, but it wasn't generic.

The way I just fixed mine in case none of the above work is to edit the "settings.xml" file which you can find in the "VirtualDJ" folder in "My Documents". Under the <skins> section is a setting called <maximized> - mine was set to 0. Changed it to 1 and fixed the issue.

You might want to make a backup of the file before changing it though just in case you accidentally change something else.

Hi,
had the same problem, also with some programs while other worked normally! (e.g. chrome didn't work firefox did, irfan didn't spotify did etc.) The problem turned out to be a simple fix / stupidity on my part. I had been watching videos via hdmi on an external monitor. After I removed the hdmi cable I neglected to reset my display to disconnect external monitor. When I did that everything returned to normal. Hope this helps.
