Programs minimize when I adjust Volume

Well the title pretty much says it all. Every time I have a program open and I use the keyboard to adjust the volume the program that I am using minimizes. I searched these forums for an answer but couldn't really find anything. Does anyone else have this problem? I am not sure what to do and want to fix it.

This is on a computer less than a week old.

do you have any application that 'maps' specific keys? Was this an upgrade? what keys are you using for the volume?

Thank you for the welcome, I have no application that maps the specific keys I am aware of, unless it comes default with the computer. There is a volume adjustment button at the top of the keyboard that I use (specifically for volume only). I am kind of confused what you mean by an upgrade though? It is a brand spankin new computer which had Windows 7 pre installed. (Not sure if that answers your question)

Just wanted to say that I'm having the same issue, and it's rather obnoxious. Whenever I'm playing a game and I need to adjust the volume, the game gets minimized. This is on a Sony Vaio FW-490 laptop using the volume control buttons at the top of the keyboard. If anyone can suggest a fix, it would be greatly appreciated. I'll update if I find anything myself.

It could be a driver issue. Have you run Windows Updates and checked optional updates?

Nope

My computer is completely up to date including all optional updates. It seems to me that Windows is considering the volume adjustment image that pops up to be its own window, so it minimizes my full screen window when that pseudo-window pops up. For me this only happens with a full screen application like most computer games, never with any other windows.

Another clue is that Civilization IV is minimized by this, but Team Fortress 2 does not get minimized when I adjust the volume. I'll try some other games later.

You might want to remap the keys but the panel might not be supported.

I have the same problem. I just bought an HP p6228p. It minimizes when I adjust the volume via keyboard when I'm playing games or have a program open. Drivers are updated. It's very annoying!

I am also having the same annoying problem with the volume as well as the windows key. Scouring the internet and asking my IT friends have yielded little to no results.

I am running an HP 9220 about a week old and been doing this right out of the box.

I had the same issue

I had the same issue on my new HP e9220y. Go into your control panel and delete the MediaSmart-SmartMenu program from the programs list and then reboot your machine. This fixed my issue and I can now adjust volume while playing games or watching DVD's. Hope it helps.

i had the same exact issue on my HP Pavillion dv7 Notebook. The fix noted in this thread works for me but also eliminates the visual volume display completely (the volume is still controlled though).
