programs not responding

I have been using Windows 7 RC for awhile now and have very few complaints, however, one problem I am having which is becoming very annoying is when I try to open or save a file from another program that program stops responding. I also get this problem when i open computer, network, windows explorer of places like that.

any information as to how to go about fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

1. Find the app/process which does this to you most often and most reproducibly.
2. Start Task Manager (TM).
3. Repro the problem. Once the app/process is in the "not responding" state...
4. In TM, on the "applications" tab, find the window whose status is "not responding", then right-click and "Create dump file". A few seconds later, a window will pop up with the path to a file with a DMP extension.
5. Compress that DMP file as tightly as possible and then upload it to Rapidshare.com or a similar service. Paste the link back here.

Analysis of that memory dump may reveal why the app/process is "not responding".

I was getting frequent issues with this, mainly with IE and FireFox, as well as the shutdown cycle hanging. I have disabled Spy Sweeper and, so far, have not been seeing any problems. Don't know if Spy Sweeper is conflicting with the OS or another program.

Spy Sweeper has AV, but it was disabled so as to not conflict with ESET AV.

Will report more as my testing without SpySweeper continues.

Same here AbdRahim. I receive "not responding in "Word", "windows media player" "internet explorer" and my purchased burner "Ashampoo Studio 9". Pretty much you name it it has thrown "not responding" at me. Please no one tell me that reloading is my fix! I'll do it I just don't wanna! If I wait they eventually run but I didn't buy Windows 7 to wait for it to self correct.

I have some issues with Spy Sweeper on my Win 7 64 bits system.

1:Opening My Computer sometimes will hang with a green status bar running across the top of the window and no drives are displayed.

2: IE8 randomly freezes...it whites out and stops responding.....

3: Outlook randomly freezes and whites out and stops responding....

All issues are gone when spy sweeper ( latest version without anti-virus) is removed from the system.

Asus P6T; Intel i920; 6 GB memory; latest McAfee and now without spy sweeper....

Guys not sure how much this helps, but I have found the two biggest culprits are:

1) and I really feel this is the biggest one, is the power settings for your hard drive. I have just tweaked mine to not turn off the hd for 2 hours and am yet waiting to see the "not responding", If I don't see it for 2 hours I will set it to never, and never look back. Yes I have a sH@tload of apps open to test this theory.

2) I run Norton endpoint security, and noticed turning off the active scan from the default to once a day reduces this greatly, before I think the default runs hourly, it would interrupt movies as I was watching them. Currently I have turned this on to run every 10 minutes so I can rule this out over the HD going to sleep.


It has been over 10 minutes and I have yet to see my friend "Not Responding" and all the usual suspects have been running and then some. Yes I added photoshop in there too to really test this.


I will post tomorrow to update if this fixed it.

Keep in mind a lot of drives are green nowadays and may have additional settings beyond the windows power.
