PS unit ~ how many watts for 8GB ddr3 1333 ?

the mobo is a 775 socket yes, however the board will handle ddr3 at 1333 FSB. I was surprised when i saw this board.

I'm curious, could you tell its name? it should be printed in biggish letters/numbers close to the RAM slots.

Secondarily, for your next projects, I'd like to point out that the RAM frequency doesn't have a huge impact on performance, so I suggest to take RAM at a slower frequency and invest the savings in a good CPU which does make a lot of difference.
Depending on the program, you may want to have a decent graphic card as well. Not gaming ones, but usually something better than integrated graphics.

He's using Pinnacle and i believe Sony Vegas Pro. As far as the format/resolution of the source footage, and format/resolution at end product is, that i cannot tell you because i do not know. What i do know is the man knows how to do vids, do them well.

I suggest to ask your man if he needs specific ports to connect his stuff and transfer data. More often than not you can find an expansion PCI card or PCIe card for that. I know because I know another guy working with such stuff and downloading raw HD video (which is much longer than the finished product that has tons of video cut away) from a camera takes a looooong while on USB 2.0 (the only kind of port that mobo likely has).

As far as I know, the GPU (graphic card) is completely irrelevant for Sony vegas 10 or less, and even after that it's not critical. So as long as the CPU doesn't totally suck, you should run fine.

For "Pinnacle", most products seems to require a graphic card that supports DirectX, so the onboard graphics of your mobo may not be enough. Still, even a cheapo graphic card should do.
Knowing that Pinnacle program and what version it is should help nail down its requirements a bit better (ask him the name and version of his software).

i haven't done this but from what i am understanding as long as i am running a 64bit chip and have a 64bit op system i am pretty much good to go on the amount of ram i can pump into it, providing the mobo will support it? ex: 8, 16, 24, 32 GB if mobo will take it, yeah? and i am talking win7 HPrem 64 bit, not ultimate

Agree fully with ignatzatsonic, Hprem is limited to 16 GB (and the mobo will be limited to that as well), and you really don't need more unless you are running a badass server OR virtual machines. Video editing won't fill 16 GB.

Instead of wasting money on 32 or even 64 gigs of ram (and a mobo that supports it), you should invest in a good CPU and then in a SSD (solid state disk) that allows the machine to be snappy and responsive. (then keep a biggish normal hard drive to keep the bulk of the raw movie stuff, as you may notice SSDs are smaller in capacity and higher in price, raw movie data are going to fill 500 gigs pretty quick, but again, ask your man to get more tailored needs).

I am using an Antec True Power 650 on my setup.
Been using it for a qhite a few upgrades, e8400, Q9400, Q6600, i7 870, i7 2600K, and now with my i7 3770K.
Graphics cards that have been used were a 9800GT, GTX260, GTX285 with a 9600GT for 3 screens, an HD5850 and finally to an HD6950.
System also had 9 7200rpm hard drives at one time, now has 1 7200rpm, 6 5400rpm green drives, and 2 SSD's.

So a good 650 watt psu is all you would need.

Btw, I am not sure how many of you saw the Doritos commercial that won the $1 Million Crash the Superbowl contest, it was the big dog that buried the cat and bribed the wife's husband with Doritos to not say anything. It's titled "Mans Best Friend".
I built and maintain the computer that was used to edit that commercial. It's a Q9550 based machine with 8gb ram and I sold him my old GTX285 since he uses premiere pro and shoots with a Canon 7D. The GTX285 helps to playback the 1080P 7D footage with at least 2 video effects without any stuttering or pre rendering on the timeline.
I've built and upgraded his computers since 1996.


Oh, and the HD video editing system I built for another friend of mine a few years ago is based on the Matrox RT.X2 card.
It is an Asus socket 775 core2duo based machine with ddr3 memory. Motherboard was expensive and has ddr2 and ddr3 slots. I built it to Matrox's specifications.

Here is a test I did with premiere pro, look how much ram is free while just working with a short sd clip with a couple of effects on it.

Also, I would recommend upgrading to a multi screen setup with the next build, makes it less cluttered.
You can customize your work area for maximum efficiency.

Bob, this is a Biostar G41D3C Intel G41 Socket 775 mATX mobo w/vid. Main features Dual ddr3-1333, graphics core DX10, Bios Flasher and will support Intel Core 2 Quad. The mobo was so dirt cheap for what it does, figured it would be good as an intermediate until i get other system built. I know it is an older board but got it new w/ warranty (prob and overstock item) and the specs seemed like it would do what i needed it to do and for super reasonable, least i thought for the payoff.....so for me, a plus. We may decide to throw a quad in it come Monday, we'll see. I am not going to close this out "As Solved" until we getter done. I will return on this post, and record our experience. There may be someone else who is itching for knowledge like myself....maybe the post w/ all your wonderful input and the experience from all will help someone else too. When we're done w/ this puppy, then i will close it out.

Not sure on his software ver for SonyVPro or even Pinnacle because he has changed stuff within the last year....but will def pass this data onto him, Bob. Thank you !!

Windows 7 Home Premium is limited to 16 GB of RAM.

But 90% of users are OK with 8 and probably 99.5% with 16.

Thx ignatzatsonic ~ This is a question I had and I can tell by your response here and aligning w/ Bob that you guys have got it straight. Much more than i knew a few hours ago ! Really no skin off'a your nose, but just so you know that someone is paying attn ~ I will NOT be laying out cash-ola anymore than 8-16 GB ram for the next unit putting together. Already started parts on it. It will have a great CPU the Intel i-core7 Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz. If I had studied more or been dialed into you blokes sooner prob would have had a better board...but that board has already been purchased and in the wings for when i gather all the parts...what i did get is good, just maybe not considered a "Super-Hot" mobo...but still ok i think. I will be combining the i-core7 w/ an Asus P8Z77-V mobo. I will put either 8 or 16 GB ram in it, and run thru the calc's to compute the PS load. Had i looked a little more, prob would'a went with the Pro....just sayin' due to learning a little bit more about those boards after the fact. Truth be told, I am still content w/ my purchase ~ it's ok. I am not really crying over the decision....I view it like this: I learned something in the process.

You can calculate the wattage by simply multiplying the current by the voltage (stated on the PSU specification sticker) and you are always or I am guided by the specs of the 12v rail current. ie 12v X 25 amps = 300watts.

Hey, you speak as though you are a tech, brother-man ! Least sounds like sum stuff the elec techs would rattle off when i am at the farm ! Haha! Yep ignazatsonic I have my Sandy Brudge loaded with 16GB and it is only using 13% 14GB is just keeping time LOL!!
