Anyone else having trouble recognizing their PS3? I love this app! Did transcoding and everything I needed with little hassle. After my Win7 Upgrade, the app doesn't recoginize the PS3 and vice versa.

Try disabling SSDP and UPnP services. Reboot.

Find them by going to start menu search box, type services.msc and hit enter.

At default, the Windows Firewall is enabled. Check that there are appropriate server permissions set within it and can accept incoming requests for the application you're using to serve. If you aren't sure how to do this, you may temporarily completely disable the firewall to test. In the services page, it is called Windows Firewall.
Re-enable after your testing.

At the start menu search box, copy and paste WF.msc, hit enter for that.

Check that your router is set to be UPnP enabled. If not, check the setting and save to do so.

After doing a re-install of the PS Media Server, the app now recognizes the PS3. However, something seems to be off on my audio encoding. Some of the 5.1 channels are not coming through properly. There's sound but for my MKV files, voices oftern get completely lost. I've started doing an uninstall/reinstall of the related utilities; ffmpeg, ac3fileter, ffdshow, etc.

Does anyone know how many of these tools are required for 5.1/Dolby decoding and the configs? I find it hard to understand why streaming MKV is so tough in this day and age..

In my experience, and perhaps you may read otherwise elsewhere, .mkv is tough to stream to PS3. It really all depends on the codecs in use. For instance, PS3 can not play .dts audio unless it is on a physical Blu-Ray disc placed in the machine.

You can use tsMuxer to find info on a file and to to remux .mkv to .m2ts and they will play. You can encode .dts to .ac3 and then add it to the .mkv so you have both audios and do not lose high quality of .dts. In this case use tsMuxer to add the x264 video + .dts audio + .ac3 = .m2ts that will play on PS3 and PC.

I have Windows Media Player 11 showing on my PS3, I had to renable Media Player Network and SSDP Services to make it work correctly, also go to WMP11/WMP12 Library and click on Media Streaming. I'm back on Vista though, so I've forgotten the rest of steps in WMP12.

Yes. Because you can't have both running on the same machine at the same time. At least at default. Perhaps you can change the port of one of them, but it probably still wouldn't work.

It IS possible to run multiple Media Streaming services on the same PC to the PS3, I once had TVersity, WMP11 Server, PlayOn, PS3 Media Server ALL running at once with no issues just to test which one is the best and to my conclusion, the best Media Server program is Windows Media Player 11/12 for the PS3, it is simple and to the point and if you have K-Lite Codecs installed, it is even more useful than default :) plus the File System that displays on PS3 XMB is better laid out with WMP11 than 3rd party programs.

Cool. I just learned something. :D

TVersity has the option to show content the same as Windows file system. In Settings, Media Library, there is a Media Library Menus part with a dropdown. Default choice is "default." You can change it to "File System." It's what I use and like it a lot.

Yea, but the File System is pretty USELESS since PS3 can't view anything else but photos, music, videos. So WMP11/12 is straight to the point.

I have had multiple Media servers going in the past and after the Win 7 upgrade, I can now see both WMP and PS3 Media Server but the PS3-MS doesn't play 5.1 or better sound correctly. Some channels seemed to drop right out. The speakers work because depending on the scene I do hear something. I've tried Dolby and AAC.

Under Vista it took me some research and trying but I was finally able to the PS3-MS going perfectly, 5.1, mkv, all formats transcoding on the fly and it was great. Now I am running 1GB ethernet and a quad core processor so I have a bit of an advantage there. Just frustrated that my upgrade has now resulted in reduced functionality.

A couple of questions:
  • Anyone running PS3-MS, Tversity or other media server to run under Win 7?
  • Has anyone gotten MKV to stream to a PS3 under Win 7? if so, how?
  • Has anyone gotten 5.1 sound or better?
  • Codecs? media splitters?

I use TVersity. I found the simplest way for mkv is to remux them to .m2ts using tsMuxer. PS3 can not play .dts (if .mkv has that) audio unless on physical disc. In the case you can re-encode .dts to .ac3 and then add .ac3 to original file while muxing to .m2ts. File will then have both audios and play everywhere.

DTS working

Just and FYI, I finally got DTS working on PS3 Media Server and the PS3. I'm sure I had checked this setting earlier but I must've missed it.

When watching the video on the PS3, bring up the Options menu (triangle?). Select Sound. Make sure the sound level is at normal and not + or - anything. That seemed to do the trick.

For those still unsure about PS3 Media Server, I suggest giving it a shot. It's worked with almost everything I've thrown at it include 1080p MKV files and DTS. I stopped having to pre-remux files a long time ago.
