PS3 Problem

OK so since swapping to 7 from XP I've had a problem with getting my PS3 online. It's setup so my internet goes from my router to my PC via Ethernet and then from my PC to my PS3 via Ethernet again. Currently this is what my connections look like, obviously the top one is my PC to router and the bottom is PC to PS3. How do I get them as one or to allow the second connection internet access?

Connect the PS3 to the router either wirelessly or by cable.

Take the cable that goes from the PS3 to the computer. Detach it from computer and connect it to router. If it's not long enough, use wireless.

I can't do that as it's in another room. I don't want to do it wireless either.

Why would you not want wireless? With WPA2, it's as secure as cable.

Because I haven't had to with XP, why should a new version of Windows change that? Are you saying that I'm not going to get this to work the way it was? If so I think I'll just go back to XP.

I'm showing you the best way to go about things regardless of OS in use. XP is a great OS, so go back to it if you wish.

7 is better and can do what you want. In my opinion, it shouldn't be what you want.

My PS3 is sat next to my PC, why would connecting it wireless to the router be better then cabled to the PC? Regardless of if it's the best or not how can I get it to actually work?

Because the PS3 will not depend on your PC at all and traffic will not get routed through the PC either, saving resources.

You can turn off PC and still use PS3 on the net.

The PC is always on, so that doesn't really matter.

You seem to want this to work rather much. Although I completely disagree with it, I'll offer advice anyhow.

Type services.msc in the start menu search box then hit enter. Make sure Internet Connection Sharing service is set to automatic and started too.

If you still can't get it to work, assign a static ip to the nic connected to PS3.

Then on the PS3, assign a static ip with an address on the same subnet.

The 10.0.0.x range is good to use. When assigning ips, for default gateway, tell them to use the other machine's ip address you assigned. In other words, make them each (PS3 and computer) default gateways for the other.

When I tell it to start the service it just says that it started and stopped and that it does this when not in use. Does that mean it's not seeing my PS3's attempt to connect to the net?

Just to add, I checked the wireless connection and the signal strength is only 42% which is why I prefer wired for this.

If you want to try wireless again, change the channel it is set for, for radio, in the router configuration page. Also make sure signal strength (or transmit power) is set to 100%. Set it for short preamble too.

As for the wired like you're trying now - in services, before you start ICS - set these to automatic and start them if they are not already:

Base Filtering Engine
Network Connections
Remote Access Connection Manager
Windows Management Instrumentation

If you still can not start the ICS service, assign the ip addresses manually as I previously outlined on the PS3 and PC. Then try to enable the ICS service to start.

If you have a 3rd party firewall or antivirus on the PC, disable them and reboot to test if you still are having troubles.

But ya, try the wireless suggestions if you'd like.

Putting the wired idea to one side, I changed the preamble mode to short and the strength dropped to 22%. I couldn't find signal strength (or transmit power) in the netgear settings. Any ideas?
