Hi All,

I really hope someone can help me here. I have what I believe to be a driver issue.

Every time I boot my PC cold I get a Pink Screen of Death, there is very little showing in event viewer and the only time I managed to get any sort of log during boot was this one:

Code:
Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:	BlueScreen
  OS Version:	6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48

I am unsure if this is even related to the PSOD or is an entirely different issue but I am trying to give you guys enough info to help me.

My first reaction was that my GFX card was failing as I know the GTX 280 was prone to that particular problem. But I am leaning away from that now for a couple of reasons.

1. This issue was not present until shortly after I upgraded my sound card, this could be a coincidence but it just seems fishy to me.
2. If I boot into my new installation of Ubuntu, it boot's first time, every time without any PSOD whatsoever.

I consider myself pretty PC literate but this problem has me beat. I really don't want to pay for a new GFX card only to discover that is not the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi,

Thanks for replying.

The computer has ran a chkdsk following recent PSOD on it's own, I have not ran a further one since, might this help?

I have had numerous video drivers installed, I did have the latest but found it unstable in one of my games so I went back to 314.22 for stability reasons.

The sound card is the Asus Xonar DG and I have installed the latest drivers I could find online for the card.

Ok Will mate have you tried any malware scans yet as well? if not try these and delete any rubbish they find

http://www.superantispyware.com/

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

(download from bleeping computer)

Now I have that very same sound card in all of my machines and haven't had an issue as I also run GTX 650's too so I don't think there is a conflict between the softwares of them.

It is the PSOD that has me fooled as I have never heard of one before or do you and I am going out on a limb here think that it is really a BSOD and the card is bung?

I run MSE when it prompts me to. I will try these other 3 pieces of software also. I will need to wait until tomorrow before I can report if the problem is rectified. The PC is running now and once it is up and running I can reboot over and over without a single issue.

I do not genuinely think the BSOD and the PSOD are related. This is on the basis that I have only seen a BSOD log once and I have had this problem at least 4 times a day for the last couple of weeks.

Another think that is confusing me, if my GFX Card was failing, surely the PSOD would be presented when I started gaming?

I can run FFXIV for a full day almost (I deliberately leave it running while I go about my business) which is quite graphically intensive for my machine without a single issue?

Well yes Will they are related only because as you can see that the colour is being generated by the card. Well in my mind anyway.

You haven't tried reseating the card or running any tests on it?

You could try this if you do reseat the card as well.

SLOTCLEANING

Now as for the slots to clean them use astrip of old credit card about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them off hold apiece of thin lint free cloth over the end dab on some form of alcohol - isopropyl alcohol (what we swab the skin with before an injection) is good and GENTLY swipe along the slots.

This can also be done for the GPU slot/s.

Hi Again,

I ran all the 3 Anti-Malware programs and my system come's up clean.

I have reseated the card and found it has no effect. I also ran Furmark on my card for 10 minutes. The temperature does go quite high (104 degree's) but I experience no Artifacting or system crashes, or any form of PSOD.

In terms of slot cleaning, what is the best thing to buy that contains that type of alcohol?

I have never cleaned the pc in that way before.

Thanks Again,

Will

Will I should think any pharmacy will sell that sort of alcohol it is only that I work in health and have access to those swabs that I squeeze onto the cloth. But in any case any alcohol (not grog obviously because it would contain contaminants) will do even methylated spirits is acceptable.

Hi There,

So I have tried all the suggestions now and unfortunately the problem still exists.

I can still boot into Ubuntu without any graphical corruption or error. I have also found that if I let ubuntu run for a while, check my emails/forums etc so the PC is heated up then boot into window's it will boot on the first or second attempt. Whereas it I go cold into windows it can take up to 8 times to get booted into windows.

So do you think this is a sign my aging GTX 280 is on the way out?

I'll happily pay to replace the card, i'd just be concerned if I do and it turns out to be something else.

Once again, thanks for all your help.

Will

Yes Will it does look that way mate maybe it is because the Ubuntu is notusing the system as much as Windows I don't know to be honest. But pity youdidn't have access to a spare card or maybe try the on board graphics.

Other than that another card. I am using this as main one at the moment havea look at the specs to see if it suits you keeping in mind I am not a gamer soam not real sure how this one would be for your use http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX650_TIDC2T1GD5/#overviewbut it is reasonably priced.

It would still be a considerable improvement over the the 280.

Unfortunately I don't have the option of using on-board video as my motherboard doesn't have on-board vid.

Also my only 'spare' graphics card is my old AGP graphic's card which I don't believe my motherboard will even have a slot for.

Ah ha, you have the boost, I am not sure if I can afford that one, it's slightly out of my price range this side of Christmas.

I have been reading around at the HD 7850 comes a close second to the boost and I can pick one up for £115 whereas the best I have found on the boost is £130.

I know it probably sounds petty when it's only £15 but you gotta look after the pennies eh?

Do you have any experience with the ATI card's?

Thanks,

Will

No mate I went over to NVidia a long time ago the AMD stuff didn't do a lot for me.

Actually the non boost TTX 650 isn't any slouch to be honest I have one in the Sandy Bridge and the tester machines I use the boost for my main machine.
