PSU advice

hi folks
im lookin for a new PSU and am unsure weather i should get a decent 650w or 800w.
i curruntly have an EZCOOL PS 1000 INFINITY 800W.
at the min im running a gigabyte 880DA-UD3H mobo
AMD Athlon2 640 x4, but am upgrading Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz
Corsair xms3 8GB 2x4 1066mhz
xfx radeon HD6850 df
x-fi extreme music
1x1TB hitachi
Coolermaster elite 335 case
these r what i have to choose from unless any suggestions

another thing. am i right in thinkin that wen the bulldozers hit the stores that cpu,s like phenom II X4 965 Black Edition will come down in price quite a bit?

Here is a good PSU calculator that is more detailed than most. I suggest buying at least 30% more than you need. It allows for upgrades, compensates for aging, and will make your PSU last longer because it doesn't strain it. Read the user feedback on several sites to help determine which brand to buy. Personally, I prefer Corsair, Antec or Seasonic. Modular makes for an easy build and a much more clean look, but also cost a little more.

i used the xfx calculater but i included the upgrades i have planned. it said id need 472w so i was planning on getting 650w either

maybe a silly question, it just occured to me.the connections r standard wen it comes to intel or amd are,nt they.(no different)?

Most of the connectors are standard. Check the motherboard. It will tell you whether it needs a 20 pin or 24 pin connector and whether it uses a 4 pin or 8 pin CPU power connector. Most power supplys will list the connectors and most today come with a 20+4 connector so it can be used for a 20 pin or 24 pin MB connector. Most of the rest are standard sata and molex type connectors. Just look at your graphics cards power connectors and make sure the PSU has those connectors. But you can also get adaptor cables for a graphics card that will connect to a molex connector, But I prefer the connectors to be on the PSU. I don't know if it makes that much difference, I just like it that way.

PSU connectors are standard, although the auxiliary 12V connector might be either a 4-pin or 8-pin depending on the motherboard. As regards wattage, you should be OK with that, although it won't do any harm to fit a PSU of greater capacity, particularly if you might be considering upgrading your system (adding extra HDDs/SDDs, etc).

This 750W alternative is less than £10 more expensive than its 650W cousin.

cheers for ur replies folks, i think i will go for the 1 Dwarf linked as i was originally lookin for 1 around 800w. thanks! lookin in my mobo manual its an 8pin conecter for the cpu so i take it wen it says in the discription for the psu,s connecters 1x4+4 pin cpu+12v that fits both 4 and 8 pin?
and the 2x6+2pin PCI-E power would b for my GPU? well 1 of them anyway

You're welcome.

The 1x4+4 pin cpu+12v connector indicates that it is a single cable to the PSU, and that the motherboard plug on the cable splits into two to enable the same cable to fit either a 4-pin or an 8-pin socket.

In the same way, the 2x6+2 pin PCI-E enables upto 2 cards to be supported that require either a 6-wire or 8-wire auxiliary power connection. There are some cards that require 2 such connections, although I'm not sure whether this can be supplied by two connectors from a single cable.

i thought so cheers. something else just occured to me soz lol. my mobo has a couple of usb3 ports. i have an external hitachi hdd. if i was to change the usb lead to that hdd to a usb3 lead would i get the better speeds or would it not change due to the hdd not being usb3 compatible?

The controller in the external drive is probably USB2, so you'd get no advantage.

Even the fastest HDD will not saturate a USB2 interface, so you will not get any benefits from connecting it with a USB3 cable. In addition, although the USB3 sockets will accept USB2 cables as well as USB3 ones, the same is not true of the reverse, so it is extremely unlikely that a USB3 cable will fit your external enclosure anyway.

Assuming that you do have an enclosure that accepts a USB3 cable, you still won't get an increase in speed when using a HDD due to it being an electro-mechanical device. For that, you require an SSD, and even those will not saturate a USB2 interface (although they are getting closer).

Also ensure any PSU you buy has at least 2 12V rails. I had a 600w ezcool which had only 1 12v rail and it failed big time as it couldn't supply the necessary amps. I now have an OCZ which has 4 12v rails each supplying 18A giving me 72A in total whereas the excool could only manage 25A with the same wattage. Amps are far more important these days.

its an ezcool 800w dual 12v rails i hav at the min. but i have heard stories about them not being to good. now im paranoid of it killin my pc lol. eventhough its only 5months old. the person i had build my pc put it in. id much rather have 1 that better brand. better safe than sorry

in the specs it doesnt say that the coolermaster is dual rail. but a lot of the better 1's ive looked at today havent either
