PSU issue with GPU 680

Hi I installed a new GPU Nvidia GTX 680 which has a six and an eight pin power socket, I now get a message to power down my copmuter and plug in a PCi e cable which I had done.
Am I doing some thing wrong?

Well you definitely have enough power for it; a friend of mine suffered the same and it wound up being the card. What you can do is, if you have a spare PSU anywhere, use that to power the card and board and eliminate it (the card) as a possible culprit.

Hi a power cable came with the card a two six pin to eight pin molex do I need it? do I plug two six pins in and the eight pin to the card, and omit the six pin?

No you don't need the molex adapter. You do need to connect both the 6 pin and 8 pin connectors for the card to work properly, which shouldn't be a problem as your power supply has two of each.

The cable I have is a six pin and a six pin+two pin, is this okay to use?
My old card only required the two six pins.

The six + two is the 8 pin connector. It comes that way instead of all 8 so that it can be used on cards like your old one that required two 6 pin.

Let's be clear on this:

You have both the 6 pin and 8 pin (really 6+2 pin) PCI-E power connectors attached? The locking clips are engaged on both? (The 2 pins on the 6+2 aren't locked down, so you'll have to be careful that they're in all the way.)

If the answer is "yes", you may have a serious problem.

The answer is yes and I have already made arrangements to return the card.
I just hope that the replacement works, if not then I would have a serious problem...lol

A Second card arrived yesterday, I fitted it, both LED'S above the connectors lit, and it wouldn't even boot. Took it out fitted my old card, all normal.

Seems unlikely that you'd have two bad cards.

Is your "old" card the Radeon 5870?

One semi-random suggestion: clear the CMOS. (Also known as clearing the RTC.) I've had to do that when switching between AMD and nVidia cards. I don't know why.

Hi Yes my "old" card is the Radeon 5870.
Yes, it is unlikely that two cards are bad, although it's possible, and that's why I'm reluctant to return it to Amazon, as I will end up with triple sli GPU's and no where to put them..lol
I have called ASUS support in Greece, and I have sent them an email, I'm waiting to see what they suggest.
I am also waiting to hear from Amazon to see if the first card is dodgy or not.
I will try your suggestion, as well.

I purchased a new PSU and tested the card and it's "dead".
