Solved PSU Upgrade from 9PA3007406 to something better?

I have a Gateway DX4870, recently installed new WD HD, ordered a new Blu-Ray burner, and at some point would like to upgrade a few of the other components (maybe the mobo, graphics, ram, etc, not entirely certain yet).

That being said, it came stock with a 300W 9PA3007406 PSU and I'd like to replace it with something better that won't break the bank but is reliable and maybe a little higher wattage for future upgrades.

I have an Antec VP-450 in my kids school computer, would something like that work ok in my Gateway for a while? Or should I try something else?

Thanks for any suggestions! :D

Awesome! I saw those on Amazon but since I have only heard of the other brands (Seasonic, Antec, etc) I didn't know if EVGA was a good choice. I definitely trust your opinion :D ;)

Off to check their site :)

There are good choices from EVGA, Seasonic, XFX, Antec, Superflower, and possibly others.

I'd consider factors such as return privileges with the seller, warranty, and customer service from the manufacturer if it ever came to that. As far as I know, Amazon rates pretty well on return privileges.

A good 500 to 550 watt unit is all you should ever need unless you are using multiple video cards.

Don't get overly concerned with the bronze/silver/gold/platinum thing. It has little relationship to quality. You should be able to find a number of suitable gold-rated power supplies, but I certainly wouldn't shy away from bronze or silver if it was otherwise suitable and was at a good price.

"Full modular" PSUs make for a less cluttered installation. "Semi-modular" means only some of the cables are detachable, but that's typically fine as well.

Some people are more sensitive to fan noise than others and some PSUs are definitely louder than others. There are a few models whose fans do not spin at all until the PC is under a pretty good load.

There's some chance that your particular Gateway case doesn't have enough space to mount all ATX power supplies, so I'd probably measure the existing one and try to replace it with one of the same dimensions. This isn't a common problem, but it can happen with OEM PCs like yours.

Thanks for all your replies.

I am going to measure my current psu and compare with all those suggested. It has to mount on the top so I guess I cannot buy one that is much taller than the current one.

I sure appreciate the suggestions....there are so many brands to choose from!!

Looks exactly like that! So....do I have to look for something specific in a PSU?

Thanks for your help! :D

Ebay listing that shows the current psu in my pc

Probably should have mentioned that the psu is 3 years old, another reason I figured it's time for a new one

Hi,
Well I'm sure the stock psu is no prize but it looks like a normal mid tower and a regular atx psu will work fine or at least it looks like one should

I would get a modular psu so you can only use the wiring you need and it just look 100% better ;)

EVGA 850 G2 is a good choice and a lot better future proofing for additional upgrades = Graphic's cards in the 980ti series or even the titan series depending on how you go with that.

Yep everything i pull up says a atx psu will fit they are just deeper in the case than the narrow stock one.

Looks exactly like that! So....do I have to look for something specific in a PSU?

Thanks for your help! :D

Your stock unit is made by FSP, which is usually a pretty good brand.

You shouldn't have to spend over 60 to 100 bucks for a high quality standard ATX unit with say 450 to 600 watts somewhere.

If you aren't in a hurry, you can probably pick up a good choice on sale within 30 days.

Try to get modular or semi-modular.

Get the dimensions from the manufacturer and compare to your existing. They don't have to match exactly, but you have to ensure that if the new PSU is say 7 inches long and the existing is 6.5, that there is nothing in the way that would prevent the 7 inch PSU from fitting in the available space.

Newegg.com and Amazon.com are 2 good sources with plenty of choices.

Here's a few good choices:

Full Modular, 500W - 599W, 400W - 499W, Newegg, XFX, Power Supplies, Power Supplies, Components - Newegg.com

EVGA 220-GS-0550-V1 80 PLUS GOLD 550 W ECO Mode Fully Modular NVIDIA SLI Ready and Crossfire Support Super Silent Continuous Power Supply - Newegg.com

EVGA 220-G2-0550-Y1 80 PLUS GOLD 550W ECO Mode Fully Modular NVIDIA SLI Ready and Crossfire Support Continuous Power Supply - Newegg.com

CORSAIR RMx RM550X 550W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Power Supply - Newegg.com

all of the above are fully modular

the Seasonic below is semi-modular

SeaSonic G Series SSR-550RM 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Newegg.com

Any of the above should be fine, but check the measurements. You might compare the above Newegg prices for the exact same model at Amazon. They might vary by 10 bucks.

If you buy EVGA, get it directly from EVGA. Use the links I posted. Newegg will charge you tax if there is a warehouse in your state, and EVGA`s shipping is $4.99, you can`t beat it.
