When you hover over the system tray notification icon you should get a bubble that says "show hidden icons". I have one computer where this bubble pulses and sometimes, when I click on it to open the tray, it won't open.

This occurs with nothing running but windows.

How can I prevent this behavior?

The Start Orb is the first thing on the taskbar (left side).
A circle (Orb) with the Windows Flag.

Does this pulsating happen at any other time or any other place?

Ok, well that just gets me to the control panel feature for customizing the notification tray and icons, which I've already been to. Changing those setting does not help. This does not occur anywhere else in the system or on any of my other Win 7 computers. It's a minor deal really; I just have to click on the notification tray two or three times and it will open. I use it a good bit because that's where my AHK icons are. It's not worth spending any time on; I was just hoping there was a simple setting that would fix it.

Thanks.

Have all your icons show in the notification area, and you`ll never have to worry about it again.:)

Well your AHK icons program just might be causing the problem.

I disable them and it still does it; other machines with same AHK code do not have the problem. It will do this on a fresh boot with minimal apps running.

Right now there are 9 icons in the tray and and the show hidden icons ballon is flashing 2 or three times a second when I mouse over it. Sometime the tray doesn't open when I click, so I just click a couple times more and it always opens. Like I said, not a big deal, but part of me just wants things to work the way they are supposed to or understand why they don't.

I have the same exact problem, but I also had the problem on my old XP machine, so I suspect it's something I've installed like Google Calendar Sync or some such thing. I've tried disabling almost every program but it still occurs. I think it is also a symptom of generally poor performance; there are others in my company with the same exact hardware as me and their systems are much faster/responsive.

This is happening on an i7 machine which is the fastest one I have, and it has no other performance issues. It's still doing it too.

Count me in!

I am having the exact same problem with the pulsing system tray icon. And it is happening on both my home W7 Home Premium 64-bit as well as my work W7 Ultimate 32-bit machines, so I assume it is something I've installed. I also suspected Google Calendar Sync and also disabled it and other suspects to no avail.

It is annoying because you have to time your click in order to show the hidden icons, but beyond that I don't think it impacts performance in any other way (although who knows).

Yes, I'm still having this issue. It only occurs on one of my 4 computers, which all have the same version of windows. The computer having the issue is dedicated to a special use, so it has minimal software (no browsers open, no email client, no anti-virus, nothing), and any software on this computer is also on other computers which do not have the problem. I've just learned to live with it.

One thing you can do is set the icons to always show on the task bar.
