Hi.
I have installed Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit on my new laptop on a new hard drive as I found Win 8 Too much. Since the Win 7 Ultimate is also installed on my desktop I need to purchase a Licence/product key. I have tried every possible search in the MS store but every trail leads to Win 8. There are inumerable stories of people being sold apparently valid Win 7 only to find they are counterfits. Where can I purchase a legitimate WIN 7 Ultimate 64 bit or product key

Any help/ideas much appreciated

Do you know for sure you need extra features in Ultimate which is the exact same OS as Home Premium but with several expensive features locked? You can check here: Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Forums.

Keep in mind that TeamViewer works vastly better for remoting.

If not you can save at least $100 by buying Home Premium which is all most consumers need.

Greg, Original or OEM Windows Home editions are no more on the market. They are all 'branded' - at least as far as I have looked.

I found this: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 32BIT Operating System Software - OEM DVD, English at TigerDirect.com

All I can find is OEM.

This is more proof that they have planned all along to smother Win7 in its crib, telling business making the final migration off of XP that 7 is not safe against BIOS infections which we've never even seen here. Even then business is reportedly moving to Win7. So this kinda flummoxes their plan to do away with Win7.

MS is making a serious mistake not making their only remaining successful OS available in all its editions, and even offering Win7 Upgrades to customers who got stuck with the 8 Phone App on their new PC's. The reviews on Best Buy are nearly unanimous against Windows Ate.

So on Sunday I get to go to MVP Summit where they will all pretend that all is well with Windows 8 and Surface. A $200 coupon was just upped to $300 for MVP purchase of the $449 Surface 2, due to it's "huge success with consumers." MS just wrote off a billion dollars worth of Surfaces.

I am going to talk about how great Win7 is.

Good find Greg. Unfortunately it is only a 32bit version.

And yes, they make it difficult for us Windows 7 fans. But I have stocked up in time.

Same here. I bought two Ultimate and one Home Premium, all three retail, about a year ago (I'm using one of the Ultimates). For the life of me, I still don't know why I bought the Home Premium. My notebook is using its own OEM Home Premium but I've considered putting Ultimate on it.

And yes, they make it difficult for us Windows 7 fans. But I have stocked up in time.

They can also use the 64 bit installer downloaded from Windows 7 Direct Download Links with the Product Key that comes with the disk. Win7 always allows either 32- or 64-bit with each license.

I did a search about a month ago and only found OEM versions too. This must be for the legions unhappy with the only OS choice being widely offered on new PC's. But I can't understand why they would hide or discontinue retail when they never did this for XP after Vista came out. It boggles the mind what they could be thinking.

What do you think?

They probably think that Windows 8 points the direction of the future - for them. As they now went also into the hardware business, they don't want this 'old gear' to stand in their way.

MS is not interested in what the user wants. They want to optimize their business. But maybe they are betting on the wrong horse.

They make all efforts to hit at competition. They even teamed up with Apple to go after Android and Google. If they cannot do it with superior products, they try it thru the courts.

It seems like Win7 has passed through their hands without them even taking notice that it is the best OS ever, a perfect realization of the Desktop Experience that a billion users depend upon to do the world's productive work. They got sidetracked by a plaything.

I have asked their top execs at Summit if they realize what a success WIn7 is and they won't waste a minute's discussion on it, only changing the discussion to the future and Windows 8, without a clue it is an abject failure and undoes everything they worked for.

Thanks for all your inputs. Doesn't look good. I have purchased Win 7 ultimate (International Version) here in Germany. Hopefully the product key will function.
Best regards
