But this debate will go on for a life time,, just as the debate of PageFile sizes etc. What services to disable or not. What the Take Ownership tool should really be used for.

I challenge those who think it is useless to prove it. Not through "I have anti-virus therefore I am safe" statements. Prove how it is useless and back it up with facts.

What I'm missing in these kind of posts is the words "In my opinion". People tending to forget them, stating their objective opinions as subjective facts are normally those "Of course I know this better than you" types whose advice can in some cases really destroy your computer.

Went looking ... found this article ... third quarter 2009, 48% of 22 million computers scanned: found to be infected. Point is there are millions of infected computers in the wild ... right now. Fact. UAC will help protect computers. It is designed with the non-tech computer user in mind. Combined with other software and common sense would mean less computers infected. Fact.

Life is risk. Some people take more risks than I want to. I don't criticize them for taking the risk. Shame I can't expect the same from the risk takers. Don't hold your breath waiting for one of them to post here admitting their computer got infected. Never happen.

Far and away more important than UAC on or off is the users habits in keeping their AV current, working, and on. My UAC is off

I can see the definite reason behind DrWho's statement.

The inbuilt security in Symbian OS (S60V3 onwards) didnt allowed lot of programs to installed, it needed to be signed digitally...people anyhow discovered the way to bypass it (by installing a patch) and is happy.

Maximum owners dont understand its done for security (whether Windows UAC, MAC / UNIX / LINUX root key prompt or Symbian mobile OS app signing); they simple want, "I bought this thing, I will click and it should run easily".

That's why we are here,, to be good stewards of security information and inform people that there is a right and a wrong way of doing things. it is not only a matter of opinion. There is a reason for it. I think many do not want to understand the reason and skip it.

Wearing a Helmet was not easy to introduce in many countries. It had to go strong legislation. Same for seatbelts, airbags!

For some, that day has come. At many colleges and universities, free wifi is offered to students on campus. Even my cheap community college has wifi everywhere on campus. But this comes with a restriction. Students must download a program called Cisco NAC Appliance (formerly Cisco Clean Access Agent). This program requires the username and password of our student email to sign in, and scans the entire computer to make sure an approved anti-virus is installed, activated, and up to date. The schools IT department can actually decide certain AVs aren't good enough, and deny access. This is done to

"protect the schools computers and others attached to the network from viruses. It is for your own protection. You should thank us for having this regulation." - Schools IT idiots

The days are here for some, and someday, what I describe may effect everyone, not just college students. Compared to the hassle that the Cisco software and the incompetent "experts" at my school. I barely even notice UAC.
