(q) How can I prevent an application from disabling DWM and Glass?

One Windows 7 x64 computer in the fleet requires a software called "SuperDVR" (from "Q See Security", the only software that will work for the hardware) be used at all times. The problem is, as soon as the application starts, the theme changes back to the basic theme and it says something along the lines of "The color scheme has been changed to Windows 7 Basic..the application doesn't support..blah blah blah". When I run the transparency troubleshooter, this restores the proper theme and everything works fine until the application is restarted next.

My question is this: Is there a way to prevent this application from erroneously disabling DWM and the Glass/Aero Transparency every time it starts (without me having to run the troubleshooter to fix it every single time)?

No luck; neither checking the "disable desktop composition" box nor the "Windows troubleshooting" box made any difference.

This is usually caused by how the program is written rather than an actual lack of resources. You can try running the program in compatibility mode, but the easiest workaround for you may be to add a Restart Aero shortcut in your right click context menu. A Guy

Compatibility mode is a no go. XP SP3 mode causes the software not to be able to start, and the next "step" up (Vista mode) causes it to do the exact same thing as before.

I was hoping there would be a way to fix this so that extra fumbling around doesn't have to be done each time the computer starts, but I will keep the "restart aero" suggestion in mind; thank you.

Have you tried running it as administrator?

One hack that you could do would be to programmatically disable composition, start the program, then enable composition. I believe it's just an API call to turn composition on and off.
