Hello,

I have a computer running Windows 7 Home premium 32bit and have just recieved a code to upgrade to windows 7 professional. My question is, do you have to clear the hard drive before updating or do you have to move ALL the files to another hard disk and THEN update. I am not to bothered about moving all my files to another hard drive for a while but if I have to do that, can someone please tell me how to do it in case i mess anything up.

Thank you for reading this.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

If you have a product key to upgrade your version of Windows 7 I assume you're using Windows Anytime Upgrade.

If so, you don't need to do anything to the hard drive and there's no need to move any of your files.

Just click Windows Anytime Upgrade and insert the product key when prompted then there'll be a wait while the upgrade takes place. How long it takes depends on how many updates will need to be downloaded and installed first, but the upgrade takes care of that.

Hello Scott, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Could you explain more about what type of code you got to upgrade your Windows 7 with?

If you mean that you got a Anytime Upgrade Key, then the tutorial below will help show you how to use it to upgrade your Windows 7 without having to do anything else. Even though it's not required to backup your files to do a Anytime Upgrade, it would be recommended to backup anything that you do not want to lose just to be extra safe.

Hope this helps,

Let's start again.

You say you've received a code to upgrade Windows Home Premium.

Do you mean a product key and if so where did you get it from? Did you buy it from the Microsoft Store?
